The Senior Scientist Tech 2 provides strategic, technical, and programmatic advice concerning ways in which emerging capabilities in high performance scientific and visual modeling for the United States Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Analysis Center (DAC). DEVCOM/DAC is the Army’s focal point for data analysis and Modeling and Simulation (M&S) from component to force-on-force level models for the Army’s Future Force Modernization Enterprise (FFME).



Responsibilities:
  • · Provide engineering technician support in the conduct of ballistic experiments on a variety of technologies including, but not limited to, unmanned aerial systems (UAS), rotary-/fixed-wing platforms, ground systems, individual components, personal protection equipment (PPE), and vehicle subsystems and systems to support warfighter survivability model inputs. The environment of interest includes performing in both an outdoor and an indoor environment that includes the presence of explosive materials, directed-energy weapon systems, small-to-medium caliber penetrators including fragment simulating projectiles, shaped charge jets, warheads, recovered high-explosive fragments, flechettes, and bare charge explosives.
  • · Setup, operate, and post-process data resulting from the use of photography, standard video, and high-speed digital imaging systems.
  • · Design and fabricate simple and complex fixtures, setups, shields, and other support devices.
  • · Instrument hardware with relevant measurement gauges (e.g., pressure, acceleration, and strain), network gauges to a data acquisition system, and reduce resulting data.
  • · Operate specific instrumentation and equipment to include, but not limited to the following: digital x-ray equipment; 3D scanner system; forklifts, cranes, tractors, frontend loaders, and utility/transport vehicles; equipment associated with ballistic gelatin mixing, casting, and testing; a wide variety of power and hand tools needed for fabrication, repair, and maintenance of components, test equipment, and safety devices; and digitizing measurement arms.
  • · Reduces arena fragment data (picking from celotex weighing, measuring, etc)
  • · Conduct advanced experimentation, data analysis, and modeling activities to expand and improve upon existing methodologies and develop new approaches in the realm of blast/shock physics. Support tasks are complex and require the application of advanced physical, electrical, and mathematical principals.
  • · Design, develop execution plans for, and perform experiments of blast and shock effects on actual or surrogate structures and occupants. Apply standard techniques when
  • available; when standard techniques are inadequate, develop new techniques, evaluate them, and document them in comparison to alternatives.
  • · Develop novel methodologies to analyze data, model outcomes, and predict results using experimentation and test data gathered from multiple test centers.
  • · Diagnose and troubleshoot instrumentation, sensors, and data acquisition systems used in experimentation.
  • · Prepare for, provide input to, and conduct experiments at experimental facilities and ranges at Aberdeen Proving Ground, other government agencies, contractor sites, and academic sites.
  • · Perform verification and validation activities of government software tools.
  • · Support Government conducted flight test upon authorization by the Procuring Contracting Officer and approval of a test plan. Such support may include participation in flight testing as a qualified non-crewmember


Qualifications:

Required:

  • · A Master’s degree Engineering or related field with 10 years’ experience. OR
  • · A Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field with 15 years’ experience.
  • · Possesses the ability to use and understand basic measuring devices (tape measures, scales, micrometers)
  • · Willingness to work around energetic materials (propellants & high explosives)
  • · Possesses the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • · Possesses basic computer skills (e-mail, word, excel) mathematics, statistics, logic, econometrics, modeling and simulation, and computers.
  • · Top Secret clearance required.
