Laboratory Research Technician
The Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine Division of the DOM is hiring for a Laboratory Research Technician. The division is led by division chief Alison Morris, MD and Executive Administrator Barbara Suchonic. The division is made of up approximately 70 clinical staff and over 100 research staff who work in a variety of locations including: Bridgeside Point, Biomedical Science Tower (BST), UPMC Hospitals including Presbyterian, Shadyside, East, Jameson and Mercy. The division provides world class services across 10 inpatient services at five hospitals and over 70,000 outpatient office visits. We have a major research mission that focuses on basic, clinical, and translational research on the lung, microbiome, COVID-19, sleep medicine, and allergy and immunology.
Under the supervision of the senior scientist, the candidate will be responsible for various day-to-day activities in order to maintain the functions of the lab. These include making stock solutions, initiating and tracking purchase requests, and organizing and tracking chemicals, supplies, and equipment. The incumbent will also be responsible for performing laboratory techniques such as immunocytochemistry, western blots, PCR, cell culture, rodent manipulation, DNA/RNA extraction, analysis of gene expression by standard methods including quantitative RT-PCR and immunoblotting. Candidate must have a good knowledge of laboratory skills, a high level of self-sufficiency, and must be able to work independently. Experience and confidence working with laboratory mice is preferred. At all times, the candidate will work under the supervision of the principal investigators. The job will provide excellent experience in a vibrant translational research environment.
Performs a variety of laboratory experiments and procedures. Prepares specimens. Oversees supply management. Operates and properly maintains equipment.
Perform lab maintenance such as cleaning and ordering reagents and materials. Propagate human and mouse cells. Genotyping of mice and breeding. Performance of experiments (western blotting, PCR, quantitative RT-PCR, immunostaining).
Must be able to stand and/or sit for up to 8 hours.
