Laboratory Manager I
Dr. Benjamin Orsburn is a new faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh Organ Pathobiology and Therapeutics Institute. Dr. Orsburn is looking for a Laboratory Manager to help set up his lab operations and manage his new lab.
The incumbent will be responsible for research activities working with Dr. Orsburn to independently conduct experiments and manage multiple projects simultaneously, as well as managing communications for collaborative projects as the main point of contact for coordinating transfer of assay/reagents, project updates, and discussions.
In addition to the research responsibilities, the incumbent will manage OPTIn Single Cell Proteomics facility including: overseeing space and consumables; managing equipment for the facility; equipment maintenance such as negotiating service contracts, scheduling instrument repairs, and preventive maintenance; coordinating the purchase of consumables, reagents and other laboratory supplies through the OPTIn purchasing system.
Applicants should have a strong background in wet bench work, have excellent communication skills and will need to be self-motivated and highly organized. Experience in either analytical chemistry or human cell culture would be a valuable addition. Although the lab specializes in mass spectrometry and proteomics, these skills are not necessary for consideration for the appointment as they can be obtained in the course of employment.
Manages day-to-day laboratory operations while ensuring compliance with safety regulations and best practices. Works with, adapts, and installs scientific equipment in research laboratories. Collaborates on routine projects and procedures. Manages inventory and equipment and performs budget functions.
Manages daily laboratory operations, including conducting and overseeing quality assurance and quality control of instruments.
Collection and optimization of lab protocols to formalized method SOPs for the training of new lab members and dissemination to collaborators.
Assists in organization, preparation, and analysis of in-house generated and collaborator samples.
Maintains accurate and timely logbooks of instrument access, use, and performance.
Helps to maintain records of lab inventories and places timely orders to ensure maximum lab uptime and productivity.
Ownership of independent research projects within the scope of the lab will be encouraged but not an essential requirement of the role.
May perform duties of lower-level roles e.g. Laboratory Research Technician, Research Program Coordinator, etc.
Ensures compliance with all applicable regulations for waste disposal; acts as department safety officer
Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time. Must be able to lift up to 30 lbs.
