Job Description
The Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) is an executive level position dedicated to the development and implementation of strategic initiatives for Hoefer Welker by formalizing process, forging working relationships and synergies across the firm, and establishing greater transparency and accountability for those carrying out Hoefer Welker’s strategy. The CSO will be the point person for assuring strategic initiatives, at all levels of the firm, are in line with Hoefer Welker’s objectives. The position requires a deep understanding of the changing business landscape, complex organizational structures, and Hoefer Welker’s pursuit of innovation. Understanding strategy development is a continuous process, the individual must exhibit rapid and effective decision making for successful execution.
The candidate must be a seasoned executive / business leader with strong strategy orientation who has led major initiatives or businesses and worn many operating hats before taking on the role. They must have a proven ability to manage as well as strategically grow service lines, market share and revenue.
The experience level for this position is ideally a former C-suite, Managing Partner, or Regional Leader capable of recognizing issues and diverse challenges confronting Hoefer Welker from a broad perspective, including internal and external innovation, business processes, labor relations, financial structure, national / international expansion, communications, mergers and acquisitions, etc. The CSO must be able to influence and unify people across the entire firm and beyond.
THREE CRITICAL TASKS FOR EXECUTION
The CSO will work with the leadership teams to determine the strategy, clarify it for every business unit, market sector and function, ensuring all employees understand the details of the strategic plan and how their work connects to the corporate goals. Their goal is to bridge strategic creation and action.
Today’s architectural market is under siege facing labor shortages, technological advancements, changing societal patterns, fluctuating economics and a change in traditional fee structures. The industry is ripe for disruption, therefore the CSO must have the ability to evolve from creating shared alignment around vision to shepherding change effectively and the ability to implement it. The CSO must be able to analyze underlying causes of stalled growth, identify new markets, develop strategic acquisition and recruitment strategies, push for innovation in services and competitively position the firm in the market. Their goal is to quickly address any inhibitors to change and develop methodologies to overcome such resistance.
The clarity of the strategy will continue to evolve around people and the state of the environment; therefore, alignment must continually be reinforced by all leaders, and not only focus on the finite results but the infinite strategy of our brand and service lines in the marketplace. The CSO must be able to create and continually reinforce alignment amongst all leaders to be certain decisions are being made in accordance with the strategy and quickly determine whether to stay the course or change direction. They must initiate direct interaction with, and gain feedback from, all levels to keep Hoefer Welker agile and the strategies initiated flexible. Their goal is to bring focus and discipline to the decision process, using candor and tact to challenge thinking and discuss underlining issues so they no longer serve as barriers to agreement or action.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture or equivalent in education or experience, Master’s degree preferred. Minimum 15 years experience in architectural practice in a similar role
Qualifications:
Candidate must be proficient in Microsoft Office. Deltek Vantangepoint knowledge preferred. Must have excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills, ability to work effectively in a team atmosphere.. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be detail oriented and able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
• Problem-solving skills in order to identify problems, evaluate options and execute solutions.
• Time management skills to manage the timeline of the strategic initiatives.
• Quality-control analysis skills to conduct the testing of products and services.
• Finance management skills to figure out the amount of money needed to execute the initiatives.
