PRINCO Staff consists of approximately 50 individuals who conduct activities across investment, operations, technology, and administrative functions. PRINCO is functionally distinct from other University departments, but members of PRINCO Staff are University employees.
PRINCO’s office is located one block from campus, in downtown Princeton.

 

Position Overview
PRINCO is seeking to hire an Investment Tax Director. The Tax Director will manage PRINCO’s regulatory risk and plan filings for various domestic and international jurisdictions and serve as a key thought leader in guiding tax and investment structuring decisions, coordinating with PRINCO’s Investment and Operations teams. The candidate will be responsible for collaborating with Princeton University’s Office of Finance and Treasury’s (OFT) in the preparation of tax returns and with OFT, the Office of the General Counsel (OGC) and other legal counsel in determining the tax treatment for various forms of legal entities, including corporations, limited partnerships, blockers, and AIVs. This position will report to the Managing Director of Operations, Administration, and Technology and will require independent judgement and decision-making.
To effectively serve in this role, the ideal candidate will be familiar with alternative investment and derivative strategies and related tax issues, GAAP, and other fair value financial reporting principles. The ideal candidate will have experience in the oversight and management of external tax preparers and consultants and in the preparation of a wide variety of tax returns. The individual will have strong communication skills and be able to effectively describe to individuals with differing expertise the regulatory, financial, and tax impacts certain structuring issues can produce. The candidate will have experience in working with cross-departmental teams to devise new solutions and will be expected to leverage investment knowledge to ensure that new investments are optimally structured and to successfully navigate US and non-US tax jurisdictions.

• Act as internal subject matter expert on asset management tax and accounting requirements and approaches.
• Work with OFT’s tax team to provide timely, accurate, and complete information for preparation of tax returns, and proactively identify new/extraordinary investment activity and potential tax issues throughout the year.
• Review tax returns prepared by outside consultants to ensure accuracy related to investment activities.
• Have a thorough understanding of business processes and their risk implications; be able to analyze complex situations, reach appropriate conclusions, and make value-added and practical recommendations.
• Maintain analyses to provide ongoing estimates of current investment income excise taxes and longer-term tax projections.
• Liaise with OFT’s team on tax matters related to investment accounting.
• Be responsible for tax regulatory reporting changes and compliance regarding US and non-US requirements, as appropriate.
• Determine tax treatment and relative impact for offshore corporate blocker structures, cash repatriation and subchapter F income.
• Build and maintain relationships with existing external investment managers, communicating proactively on tax issues when they arise.
• Serve as a member of PRINCO Diligence teams and collaborate with legal counsel, helping to structure and enable new investments.
• Develop financial models to evaluate alternative tax entity structures.
• Engage with legal counsel and/or tax advisors on regulatory issues when appropriate.
• Identify and leverage digital solutions to streamline tax operations.



Qualifications

Qualifications and Skills

• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA strongly preferred.
• 10 years of experience in asset management financial and tax accounting, including both liquid and illiquid strategies.
• Expertise in GAAP accounting requirements and tax rules as they apply to investment companies and private fund structures.
• Familiarity and experience with non-profit/tax-exempt organizations, debt-financed instruments, and Unrelated Business Taxable income issues is preferred.
• Advanced problem-solving and creative critical thinking skills to resolve ambiguous, complex and multi-variable problems.
• Advanced negotiation, managerial, and leadership skills.
• Ability to manage contradictory ideas and to arbitrate opposing views for the team to seek a “third” alternative that integrates the best of all ideas.
• Ability to organize and manage multiple projects and prioritize competing needs.
• Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
• Strong Microsoft Office skills.
• Ability to work from our Princeton, NJ, offices at least two to three days per week.
