Bachelor’s degree in a physical or natural science from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama and three years experience in a public health, medical, clinical, or research laboratory. An equivalent combination of education or experience may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with arthropods and/or animal models with special emphasis on entomology is preferred. Knowledge in protein analysis and bioinformatics preferred.
Job Description Summary
The University of South Alabama’s Microbiology and Immunology department is seeking to hire a Research Technologist III. Interested candidates should apply to be considered.
Essential Functions
These are the job duties required of the position.
Essential Functions
- Engages in multiple aspects of laboratory projects examining arthropod-pathogen-host interactions.
- Uses in vitro and in vivo models to elucidate the determinants of vector-borne transmission and pathogens.
- Maintains working knowledge of techniques and practices used in the laboratory and projects to include nucleic acid purification, PCR, tissue culture, generation of bacterial stocks, and bacteria quantification.
- Maintains mammalian and arthropod cell lines, performs basic virology techniques and records, interprets and reports data.
- Animal use/care and general laboratory equipment maintenance;
- Maintains inventory records of laboratory equipment and supplies and initiates purchase orders to replenish supplies.
- Independently designs and implements research techniques.
- Collects and analyses data and draws conclusions as related to the research project.
- Prepares data for publication.
- Supervises lower level technical positions in carrying out research experiments.
- Performs very technical and highly complex research studies.
- Supervises and maintains the operation of a research laboratory.
- Regular and prompt attendance.
- Ability to work schedule as defined and additional hours as required.
- Related duties as required.
