Responsibilities:
The Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician is responsible for the daily husbandry and health of laboratory animals housed in the vivarium, including maintenance of the facility and routine janitorial tasks. The animals and facility are maintained in accordance with Mercer University IACUC, USDA, PHS, and OLAW standards, and the Technician has received certification through AALAS confirming they know all protocols . The Technician works closely with faculty Principal Investigators and their research assistants. This position reports under direct supervision to the Director of the Animal Facility at the Department of Biomedical Sciences. The technician will consult with the Columbus Attending Veterinarian and University Veterinarian as needed for issues regarding animal husbandry and health. The technician will be responsible for collecting weekly animal inventories, maintaining an adequate supply of food and bedding, maintaining an adequate supply of materials needed for facility maintenance, completing daily task charts for each of the animal holding rooms,? and maintenance of equipment within the facility. Moreover, the technician will be responsible for general lab housekeeping/maintenance as directed by the director. In their role as Technician they will also work closely with the research laboratory manager and be responsible for general upkeep of laboratory equipment, ordering of general laboratory supplies and other miscellaneous duties associated with facilitating operation of the research space in Columbus.
Qualifications:
A high school diploma or GED is required and ALAT Certification through AALAS is required along with prior animal care experience.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Must be able to learn and apply basic principles and practices of laboratory animal care and facility maintenance.
Must be able to keep written records of animal health, daily tasks, and facility conditions.
Must be able to use e-mail, MS Word, MS Excel.
Must be able to lift 20 pounds from the squat position to shoulder height, 50 pounds to the waist height with or without reasonable accommodations.
Must be able to work with disinfectants, germicides, and cleaning agents commonly used in the animal care facility.
Must be able to work on weekends and holidays in the animal care facility on a regular basis.
Weekend and holiday hours are not shared with other MUSM employees and are the sole responsibility of the caretaker.
