Position Summary

Portland State University, with an enrollment of approximately 21,000 students, serves the Portland metropolitan area, which is a vibrant and growing community with a culturally diverse population. The Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences is a vibrant department, serving over 240 students per year. The department offers a graduate program educating future speech-language pathologists, as well as an undergraduate degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences and a post baccalaureate program preparing students to enter graduate level work in a variety of fields, especially Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. The department includes 6 tenure-track research faculty, 7 clinical faculty, and adjunct instructors. With strong connections to the surrounding community, the department strives to provide a strong educational curriculum preparing students to enter careers and graduate level work in a variety of fields. Practicing professionals regularly teach a variety of courses to SPHR students to ensure that a strong and relevant clinical perspective is offered.

Portland State University’s Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences invites applications for local Adjunct Instructors with expertise in the following core areas:
• Audiology
• Speech/Language Development
• Speech/Language Disorders
• Speech and Hearing Science

Instructors must be qualified to teach courses in one or more courses taught in Speech & Hearing Sciences (please see PSU Bulletin for individual course descriptions at https://pdx.smartcatalogiq.com/en/2024-2025/bulletin/):

SPHR Undergraduate & Graduate Electives – topics vary
SPHR Undergraduate level courses – topics vary
SPHR Graduate level courses – topics vary

Master’s degree in Speech & Hearing Sciences/Communication Disorders or Audiology, or related fields.
Related clinical work experience and/or teaching experience aligned with course content may be used in lieu of degree, at the Department’s discretion.
Certification through the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) is preferred.

This position is subject to ORS 681.250(2), which states that: “No person shall practice speech-language pathology or audiology or purport to be a speech-language pathologist or audiologist in this state unless a person is licensed in accordance with the provisions of this chapter.” Therefore, as a condition of employment, you are required to maintain an uninterrupted license for speech language pathology with the Oregon Board of Examiners.

Previous teaching experience preferred.
PhD in SPHR/CSD, AudD, or terminal degree in a closely related field, preferred.
