Job Summary:
The Laboratory Training Specialist will be responsible for the development and delivery of instructional materials and training programs aimed at educating water and wastewater operators in laboratory techniques and procedures, with a focus on water and wastewater analysis. The role includes ensuring training content is based on standardized methods as outlined in the Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater , as well as complying with relevant federal and state regulations. Additionally, the position requires maintaining laboratory equipment, performing calibration and adjustments, and offering in-service training for operational efficiency and compliance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Instructional Material Development and Delivery:
- Develop, prepare, and update training materials, manuals, and procedures to effectively teach water and wastewater operators proper laboratory techniques, including sampling, analysis, and quality control.
- Design and conduct training programs focused on laboratory procedures and techniques, ensuring operators can perform accurate and reliable water and wastewater testing.
- Ensure that all training content adheres to current federal, state, and local regulations, as well as industry best practices.
- Laboratory Equipment Maintenance and Inventory:
- Maintain an up-to-date inventory of laboratory equipment and supplies to support training activities and ensure students have access to necessary resources for hands-on testing and analysis.
- Ensure the laboratory environment reflects realistic, real-world conditions that operators will encounter in the field, fostering effective learning experiences.
- Calibration and Equipment Adjustments:
- Perform user-level calibration, troubleshooting, and adjustments to laboratory and safety equipment to ensure precise and accurate measurements during training sessions.
- Ensure that all laboratory instruments are properly maintained and calibrated to meet established quality assurance standards.
- On-the-Job and In-Service Training:
- Provide supplemental training and support to in-service water and wastewater operators, including cross-connection control and additional laboratory testing techniques.
- Customize training programs based on the needs and specific regulatory requirements of different localities or utility providers.
- Quality Assurance and Compliance:
- Stay updated on changes in industry regulations, technological advancements in laboratory techniques, and any updates to Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater .
- Monitor student performance and assess training effectiveness to ensure learning objectives are met and compliance with regulations is maintained.
Minimum Acceptable QualificationsMinimum Qualifications
- Associates degree or completion of a water/wastewater related program
- Strong knowledge of laboratory processes in the water/wastewater industry
- Knowledge of laboratory and operational related safety practices
- Valid Driver's license
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Access, Excel, and Teams
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree
- Drinking Water Supply Operator Certification from Illinois EPA (or other state)
- Wastewater Operator Certification from Illinois EPA (or other state)
- Previous teaching experience
