POSITION SUMMARY

A Cardiovascular Fellow is a physician in advanced training, focusing on the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular diseases under the supervision of attending cardiologists, with responsibilities including patient evaluation, performing diagnostic tests like echocardiograms, assisting in invasive procedures like cardiac catheterization, and actively participating in research and scholarly activities within the field of cardiology; requiring a completed internal medicine residency and a strong commitment to clinical practice and academic advancement.

This position supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts and demonstrating a commitment to teamwork and cooperation.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited medical school. Completion of an accredited Internal Medicine residency program.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Eligible for New Jersey licensure. BLS and ACLS required within two weeks of hire prior to clinical.

EXPERIENCE: Strong commitment to academic excellence and scholarly pursuits. Strong clinical skills. Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment with attending physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

Patient Care:

  • Conduct comprehensive evaluations of patients with suspected cardiovascular conditions, including taking medical histories, performing physical examinations, and interpreting diagnostic tests like EKGs and stress tests.
  • Manage patients in the cardiac intensive care unit (CCU), including monitoring vital signs, administering medications, and responding to cardiac emergencies.
  • Assist in the performance of invasive cardiac procedures like cardiac catheterization, coronary angiography, and valve interventions under the supervision of attending cardiologists.
  • Interpret complex diagnostic imaging studies like echocardiograms, nuclear medicine scans, and angiograms.
  • Provide patient education regarding cardiovascular disease management and lifestyle modifications.

Clinical Skills Development:

  • Gain proficiency in performing various cardiovascular procedures including transthoracic echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, and electrophysiology studies.
  • Participate in cardiac rhythm management, including pacemaker and defibrillator implantations.
  • Develop expertise in the management of acute coronary syndromes, heart failure, valvular heart disease, and arrhythmias.

Research and Scholarly Activity:

  • Actively participate in clinical research projects under the guidance of faculty mentors.
  • Assist in data collection, analysis, and manuscript preparation for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Present research findings at conferences and medical meetings.

Education and Teaching:

  • Provide clinical instruction and mentorship to medical students and resident physicians.
  • Participate in teaching rounds and case conferences to discuss complex cardiovascular cases.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

Potential for exposure to the hazards and risk of the hospital environment, including exposure to infectious disease, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous substances, and potential injury.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

This position reports to the Program Director and the Associate Program Director/s for clinical purposes, and to the Director of Medical Education in ADP.
