Position Summary
The Portland State University Library seeks an enthusiastic and collaborative General Education Librarian to join the dynamic campus community of Oregon’s most affordable and diverse public research university.
In coordination with the supervisor, the General Education Librarian provides library instruction primarily for undergraduate general education programs and initiatives as defined by the University Library. These programs include the University Studies program, writing composition, and others related to the undergraduate curriculum and student experience. The General Education Librarian also creates, and participates in the assessment of, online learning objects, web tutorials, guides, and other learning platforms relevant to general education. The position also provides reference and information services for the University’s students, faculty, staff, and the general public.
Instructional Activities
- Teach University Studies and other general education courses as defined by the University Library.
- Perform outreach and collaborate with faculty regarding the library’s instructional role in general education.
- Design, develop, maintain, and assess online learning objects, guides, web tutorials, and other platforms that broadly support students at Portland State.
- Provide reference and information services to the University’s students and faculty as well as embers of the public, through virtual reference and work at the reference desk.
- Work may include some evening and weekend hours.
- Participate in library instruction assessment efforts.
- Maintain awareness of developments and trends related to library instruction and outreach, particularly for underserved student populations.
- Maintain current expertise through participation in workshops, classes, professional associations and networks, and through continued awareness of the scholarly literature.
Research/Scholarly Activities:
- Engage in scholarship and research activities, as assigned.
University Service Activities:
- Contribute to faculty governance activities within the Library and the University, including the University Studies Council, and other committees, as assigned.
Professional Service Activities:
- Engage in professional service, as assigned.
Other responsibilities:
- Occasionally direct the work of part-time student employees, volunteers, or interns.
- Support the mission, goals, and objectives of the University and the Library.
- Other duties as assigned.
This is a non-tenure track faculty position at the rank of teaching assistant professor. Portland State non-tenure track faculty librarians contribute to faculty governance activities within the Library and the University. Non-tenure track faculty engage in research activities and professional service, as assigned. This 12-month, non-tenure track faculty position reports to the Research & Instruction Services Manager.

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in an academic, special, or public library
- Demonstrated familiarity with information literacy concepts
- Experience teaching, particularly classroom instruction
- Experience developing and assessing online learning objects and tutorials

Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement
Salary is dependent on several factors, and new employees will typically start around the Q1 level to allow for later growth within the salary band. PSU has a structured process for determining starting compensation, taking into account years of related experience, applicable skills, knowledge and abilities, market parity, and internal equity. The starting annual salary for this position will be $89,460 but may be negotiated above this rate dependent upon the factors above, the budget of the hiring department, and approval from HR. An excellent benefits package includes 95% premium paid healthcare; a generous retirement and vacation package; and reduced tuition rates for employee, spouse or dependent at any of the Oregon University System schools.
