Description: Description

The Grounds Worker (CS25-245) is an important member of the University Housing team and maintains the aesthetics and safety of the University Housing grounds. Under the direction of supervisory staff, this position is responsible for performing a variety of outdoor maintenance tasks, including but not limited to trash removal, grass trimming, tree and shrub care, herbicide application, snow removal, and routine equipment upkeep. The ideal candidate will be reliable, detail-oriented, and capable of working independently or as part of a team to ensure the upkeep of University Housing facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Trash and Debris Removal: Monitor housing areas regularly to collect and dispose of trash, ensuring that the grounds are always kept clean and presentable.
  • Lawn and Grounds Maintenance: Trim and mow grass areas around trees, sidewalks, buildings, and other grounds features to maintain neat and well-kept surroundings.
  • Tree and Shrub Care: Perform routine pruning and trimming of trees, shrubs, and other landscaping features to promote healthy growth and aesthetic appeal.
  • Herbicide Application: Apply herbicides safely and according to university protocols to control weeds and unwanted vegetation.
  • Furniture Movement: Assist with the transportation and movement of furniture and other equipment as required.
  • Grounds Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on grounds equipment such as mowers, trimmers, and blowers, ensuring equipment is functioning properly.
  • Snow Removal: Assist in snow removal duties during winter months, including shoveling walkways, driveways, and other public access areas to ensure safety and accessibility.

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Any one or combination totaling six (6) months from the categories below:
    1. Coursework or vocational training in horticulture, landscaping, or a closely related field, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
      • Fifteen (15) semester hours equals six (6) months
    2. Work experience in grounds maintenance, landscape maintenance, nursery, agriculture work, grounds construction, and/or tending to lawns, turfs, trees, flowers, bushes or other shrubberies, ornamental plants, and other grounds-related work.
3. Valid/current driver's license as required by the State of Illinois for the type of motor vehicles(s) to be operated by the incumbent.
