We are looking for a Lead Controls Engineer with deep expertise in automation and controls systems design for data centers. In this role, you will lead the engineering design of complex control systems, including building automation, power monitoring, environmental controls, and integration with DCIM systems. You will be a technical leader and mentor, ensuring high-quality, standards-compliant designs that meet client and project specifications across multiple concurrent initiatives.
This position is ideal for a senior-level engineer with experience delivering large-scale, mission-critical controls systems in the data center industry, who is passionate about technical excellence and mentoring junior engineers.
Remote role but MUST be located in or around (or willing to relocate to) one of the following areas: Huntsville, AL, Tulsa, OK or West- Central TX.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the Design of Control Systems
Develop and review detailed designs for Building Management Systems (BMS), Power Monitoring Systems (PMS), and other facility automation solutions specific to data center applications.
- Project Leadership & Technical Oversight
Lead controls engineering tasks across all project phasesfrom conceptual design to commissioning. Serve as the technical lead and ensure adherence to client specifications, industry standards, and internal QA/QC processes.
- Client and Stakeholder Coordination
Interface with internal teams, external engineering partners, and clients to translate requirements into robust, scalable controls solutions. Communicate technical issues and provide engineering leadership in meetings and design reviews.
- Documentation and Deliverables
Generate and review I/O lists, control panel designs, P&IDs, sequence of operations (SOOs), control narratives, and network architecture diagrams. Ensure all deliverables align with project milestones and client standards.
- Vendor & Subcontractor Engagement
Collaborate with controls vendors and contractors on equipment selection, integration strategies, and value engineering options. Support the procurement team by providing technical documentation and participating in vendor reviews.
- Commissioning Support
Provide support during startup and commissioning. Address field issues, update designs as needed and ensure a smooth transition to operations.
- Mentorship & Development
Mentor junior engineers, review their work for accuracy and completeness, and help guide their professional development.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
- DNA comprised of collaboration and teamwork.
- 7+ years of experience in controls and automation engineering, including:
- 3+ years focused on data center controls design
- Experience with BMS/BAS systems (e.g., Tridium, Honeywell, Siemens, Schneider)
- Familiarity with PMS/EPMS integration (e.g., Ignition)
- Proficient in developing controls system documentation (SOO, network diagrams, control panel layouts, etc.)
- Knowledge of HVAC systems, electrical infrastructure, and critical facility operations
- Strong understanding of PLC, HMI, and SCADA platforms
- Excellent communication and team leadership skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with data center standards such as ASHRAE TC 9.9, Uptime Institute Tier levels, and TIA-942
- Familiarity with DCIM platforms and integration
- Professional Engineering (PE) license or ability to obtain
- Experience working in an EPC or Design-Build environment
- Hands-on experience with commissioning and site support
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Revit, or BIM environments
