Post Doctoral Associate
Biological Sciences - Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh - (25002423)

Postdoctoral position to study plant evolution and ecology at the University of Pittsburgh in the Department of Biological Sciences.

Please contact Drs. Tia-Lynn Ashman (tia1@pitt.edu) and Martin Turcotte (turcotte@pitt.edu) directly to share your interest in the position.

Research Project

The postdoc will leverage our experimental duckweed system, Spirodela polyrhiza, a very rapidly reproducing floating aquatic plant. Using neopolyploid lineages that we have created from 10 genotypes representing the global phylogeny, the postdoc will experimentally test what drives the competitive outcomes between diploids and polyploids using techniques from Modern Coexistence Theory. This population-level approach will test long-standing hypotheses concerning the role of abiotic and biotic stresses, functional traits and phenotypic plasticity in promoting polyploid persistence. This postdoc is funded by an NSF DEB grant awarded to Drs. Ashman and Turcotte.

The postdoc will be:

  • Co-mentored by both PIs in research, professional development, and outreach
  • active members of the vibrant community at Pitt and that of the Biological Integrative Institute on Polyploidy (BII PI^3) www.pi3biology.org
  • supported in the development of various experimental and analytical skills in an exciting, emerging model plant system
  • major contributors to the focal projects and provided opportunities to develop independent lines of related research
  • supported in mentoring junior researchers, including those who participate regularly in Ashman/Turcotte labs
  • participate in various broader impact activities

Requirements

• Applicants should have (or will soon) a Ph.D. in a relevant field such as Biology or Botany

• Ideal candidates will have training in evolution and ecology, experience conducting experiments, strong statistical and writing skills
