Description
The Health and Civil Sector at Leidos currently has an opening for a Scientific Editor to work within the Research Support Department at the Naval Health Research Center (NHRC) in San Diego CA. Our mission is to provide high quality research support services to the Chief Science Executive, Technical Director, and NHRC Scientists to help achieve their objectives. The Scientific Editor will be primarily responsible for a variety of editing duties in the areas of writing and preparation of medical, technical, and scientific authored works for publication in peer-reviewed journals, presentations for research conferences, and in technical and sponsor reports for distribution. This role requires excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, time management, and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
This full-time position is based onsite in San Diego, CA with an approved telework agreement in place, allowing for hybrid work. Work hours to coincide with the standard command business hours of 0700-1630. The current requirement is a minimum of 1 day at the customer site per week, days of the week may vary. Please note, the telework agreement and ability to work remotely are subject to change based on organizational needs and policies.
Primary Responsibilities:
Conduct editorial review and provide recommendations on research protocols, manuscripts, reports, conference abstracts, posters, presentations, and high-level briefings
Conduct editorial review of non-public facing documents and make recommendations for changes to improve products
Edit for grammar, punctuation, and consistency, as well as format text, references, tables, and figures according to journal, sponsor, Navy, and DoD requirements, specifications, and style Maintain and edit guidelines and product lists
Effectively communicate with internal research teams to help facilitate the implementation of new or changing policies and processes
Review, edit, and recommend improvements to existing SOPs, instructions, and guides
Provide guidance on current AMA, APA, and CMOS manuals and updates as each new edition rolls out
Perform surge support functions for departmental and Command review and approval processes
Basic Qualifications
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree; 2 years of DoD experience may be submitted in lieu of a bachelor’s degree
Minimum of 3 years of experience with editing medical and scientific documentation for publication
Strong skills to critically review, independently edit, format, and synthesize various types of input (verbal, notes, emails, drafts) into a cohesive document or correspondence in accordance with the Navy Correspondence Manual, Official Navy Message Traffic, and other format policies.
Experience preparing and reviewing both technical and scientific documents
Ability to manage concurrent tasks; able to complete assignments quickly without sacrificing accuracy and attention to detail; self-starter and motivated; and adept at working in a highly customer-oriented and professional environment
Proficiency in Microsoft 365, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Adobe Acrobat; experience in virtual meeting platforms such as MS Teams and Zoom
Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
Due to Federal contract requirements, US citizenship is required.
Preferred Qualifications
Minimum of 3 years of experience working in military environment with military technical documents including point papers, policies, and messages
Working knowledge of Navy medical R&D activities and the government and military in general
Previous or current clearance or history of a completed government background check
