Postdoc position at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy

A postdoctoral position is available in Prof. Wei Zhang’s lab in the Department of Pharmaceutical Science at the University of Pittsburgh.

The overall theme of the lab is using novel polymeric and nano materials for biomedical applications. While the lab is broadly interested in research at the interface between chemistry and biomedical science, currently, the lab’s research focuses are (1) adhesive materials/wound healing, (2) stimuli-responsive materials, and (3) controlled drug delivery systems for pain.

The ideal candidate should have the following expertise and qualifications:

  • Have a strong background and interest related to the current research focus of the lab.
  • Extensive experience in organic synthesis, photo-responsive materials, and BODIPY is required.

About the PI:

Prof. Wei Zhang joined the Department of Pharmaceutical Science at the University of Pittsburgh as an assistant professor in October of 2023. Prior to Pitt, he was an assistant professor in anesthesia at Harvard Medical School. He received his BS degree in Chemistry from Peking University in 2011 and worked on liquid crystal polymers for light-emitting diodes in the lab of Prof. Qifeng Zhou. He received his PhD in Polymer Science in 2016 from the University of Akron with Prof. Stephen ZD Cheng (NAE), and worked on the synthesis and supramolecular structures of precise macromolecules based on molecular nanoparticles and polymer-nanoparticle conjugates. Then, he did postdoc training at Harvard Medical School, Boston Children’s Hospital with Prof. Daniel Kohane & Robert Langer, and worked on photo-controlled drug delivery for local anesthesia, non-invasive local drug delivery system for otitis media, tissue adhesives and contact lens. He is author of about 50 publications (17 as first, 3 as corresponding) in Science, Nat Biomed Eng, Nat Commun, ACS Cent Sci, J Am Chem Soc, Angew Chem, PNAS, etc., and 4 patents (1 licensed to a company), and he is a recipient of the NIH Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00). About the University of Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh

The University of Pittsburgh, also known as Pitt, was founded in 1787, one of the oldest universities in the US, and a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU). Pitt ranks #45 (US News) and #82 (ARWU) in the world. Pitt ranks #3 in NIH funding in the US. Pitt Pharmacy ranks #5 among US schools of pharmacy in total research funding and is known as a leader in research, education, and practice. It is one of 16 schools/colleges located on the Oakland campus, which includes the six schools of the health sciences. The School of Pharmacy partners with UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center), which is one of the leading integrated healthcare delivery networks in the country.

Pittsburgh is located in southwest Pennsylvania, the second largest city in Pennsylvania, known both as "the Steel City" for its dominant role in the history of the U.S. steel industry, and as the "City of Bridges" for its 446 bridges. After 1990, Pittsburgh transformed into a hub for the health care, education, and technology industries. Pittsburgh is nestled amid mountains and rivers, with beautiful surroundings and a favorable cost of living. Every year, Pittsburgh is recognized for its livability, innovation, vibrancy, culture, and contributions to the world.
