Position Title: Engineer I-Electric Metering
Location: Davenport, IA, United States
Description:
The electric metering engineer provides electric/electronic engineering expertise/support for the electric metering department company wide. This position is responsible for developing and delivering electric meter training and equipment documentation. This position designs interconnect metering and manages the installations. Other responsibilities include monitoring the meter quality assurance program; managing the meter accuracy verification program; the design of meter communication systems as well as troubleshooting and monthly rates; research and development of new metering configurations; interpret, analyze, and validate meter phase angle tests; management/development of electric meter software programs; maintenance of electric meter test equipment and software; and detailed analysis of metering problems. This position is also responsible for the management of the electric meter procurement budget, forecasting electric meter requirements and formulation of metering standards.
Responsibilities:
Provide engineering services involving phase angle/alarm interpretation and troubleshooting for meter installations, meter communications, and meter configurations/software. Oversee quality assurance program and metering accuracy program. (10%)
Handle technical issues involving metering and meter installations including work with customers, electricians, and company personnel. (10%)
Provide management and engineering services for planning and budgeting the electric meter program company wide. Prepare and monitor operations and maintenance budget of $5.6 million and a construction budget of $1.5 million. (10%)
Ensure that apprenticeship, meter standards and training programs are effective. (5%)
Manage and troubleshoot electric meter testing hardware and software to meet regulatory requirements. (5%)
Provide metering assistance and information to other departments. Assist other departments in resolving concerns about meter/billing accuracy. (5%)
Work with other departments on long range planning. (5%)
Manage the acquisition, design and installation of substation interconnection and generation metering. (10%)
Research, develop and deliver on site or by intranet electric meter training to electric meter technicians' company wide. (10%) Manage software, configure and upgrade computer programming on electric meter laptops and handheld computers. (5%)
Conduct engineering studies and investigations on future electric meter communication and configurations. (5%)
Research and promote new metering technologies that will enhance work efficiencies, meter reporting, safety and customer satisfaction. (5%)
Manage hundreds of cell phone accounts providing electric meter communications. (5%)
Keep informed of industry issues and technical trends that can benefit MidAmerican Energy Company's business. Work with vendors on utilizing new technologies and applications useful to the company. (5%)
Provide technical project management for software testing, computer operating system upgrades, computer replacement and electric meter test equipment upgrades. (5%)
Demonstration of knowledge and understanding of human performance improvement techniques. Evaluate present practices and implement processes, concepts, training and tools to prevent, detect and correct human errors that may adversely impact the safe, reliable operation of the electric transmission and distribution system.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited institution. (Typically six years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor's degree.)
Leadership skills as needed to direct the activities of individuals and/or teams toward the accomplishment of goals.
Technical expertise related to metering installation, testing standards and product evaluation.
Ability to analyze data; interpret spreadsheet information; and analyze and weigh results from quality assurance programs and meter accuracy testing processes and programs.
Effective oral and written communication skills. Effective analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
