The Director for Research and Innovation will report to the Associate Dean of Research in the College of Liberal Arts and Science (CLAS) and will be responsible for supporting the growing research and innovation portfolio of the College. This team member will develop initiatives with the Associate Dean of Research, work with faculty to develop research funding strategies, support interdisciplinary research programs, coordinate internal research support opportunities, and support external grant proposal submission and grant execution. This position will aim to develop new research directions, working to match opportunities from external funding agencies, foundations, and corporations with CLAS faculty.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Work with CLAS faculty to support research programs:
  • Together with Associate Dean of Research (ADR), work with faculty across the College of Liberal Arts and Science to develop funding strategies to support faculty research programs, exploring internal (College and University), federal, state, local, and foundation sources of support.
  • Support and provide communication for College grant programs that promote scholarship within the College; provide follow-up support to translate to extramural research funding.
  • Support faculty development in their pursuit of research and scholarly activities including providing mentorship and support in scoping out projects, ensuring that proposed work is consistent with existing teaching and research obligations”

Work across College and University and beyond to coordinate and support research efforts
  • Coordinate with all CLAS departments and programs on research priorities and needs.
  • Work across the College and across the University to leverage collaborative research opportunities.
  • Coordinate with other campus partners on faculty workshops and trainings on grant writing, responsible conduct of research, laboratory safety, IACUC, IRB, and other research-related needs.
  • Work with external relations and corporate relations alongside the ADR on developing new research opportunities or in support of current research programs.

Support undergraduate and graduate researchers, and postdoctoral fellows
  • Support vigorous undergraduate research participation, as well as support for masters and doctoral students.
  • Support the postdoctoral fellows within CLAS, both in their current research efforts as well as their professional development

Support innovation in the College
  • Support the pursuit of intellectual property within the College, identifying and cultivating potentially licensable technologies. Work with external technology transfer consultancy as liaison in IP communications and administration.

Provide data and financial analysis on CLAS research
  • Provide reports to the Dean and ADR on research metrics including external and internal grant portfolios, sponsored award activities, faculty publications, citations, H-indices, and other analytics as needed.
  • Provide support on monitoring and approval of expenditures in relation to available funding levels

Other duties:
  • Stay current with changes and updates in research, particularly in federal support
  • Review and update scholarship support webpages, and increase the presence of CLAS Scholarship on other sites (ie, LinkedIn)
  • Provide input into nominations for research awards for faculty and students.
Minimum Qualifications:
Formal Education
  • Bachelor’s degree required.

Work Experience
  • 3+ years of experience in academic, federal, state, or foundation administration related to research / research management / grant development, preferably in a higher education setting

Work Skills (e.g., written and verbal communication skills)
  • Individual must be a team player with strong writing, interpersonal, organizational, project management and planning skills. Must communicate and collaborate with a wide variety of constituencies

Equipment Knowledge
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office suite.

Preferred Qualifications:
Formal Education
  • Advanced degree(s) preferred

Work Experience
  • 5+ years of experience in academic administration related to research / research management / grant development, preferably in a higher education setting
