About Forterra

Forterra is a leading provider of autonomous systems for ground-based movement in the working world. Amongst some of the earliest innovators in the field of driverless technology, Forterra is focused on building systems that protect front-line soldiers and enable civilian workers in our industrial base. Forterra is the go-to provider of ground autonomy solutions for the U.S. Department of Defense, which harnesses the technology for asymmetric warfare in critical conditions.

About the role

The Forterra Hardware Product Development team seeks a motivated Junior Electrical Engineer to help drive the future generation of autonomous vehicles. The role will involve heavy learning and gradual involvement with PCBA schematic design, board layout, component management, designing/running test plans, cable design, and data analysis. Forterra is a fast-growing company at the early stages of growth. Members of our hardware team are resourceful, creative, and motivated to maintain designs from cradle to grave. The Junior Electrical Engineer role will require attention to detail and methodic approaches to the responsibilities involved. You will be working as a member of a highly skilled hardware team to design, prototype, and deliver high speed and high-power cutting-edge designs. In addition to being an inquisitive learner, you will be asked for design input with consideration for documentation, requirements, user-friendliness, and traceability. You will be expected to participate in project plans as it pertains to timelines, feasibility, and personal workload.

What you"ll do

  • Be a key member of Forterra's Hardware Product Development team – working closely with cross-functional engineers to design and test our autonomy products.
  • Manage and maintain electronic component libraries in Altium 365.
  • PCBA schematic capture, layout, and maintenance.
  • Build autonomy hardware products.
  • Assist other members of the hardware team with testing and technical problems.

Qualifications

  • Technical Aptitude and Intellectual Curiosity - We are first and foremost a technology company, working at the leading edge of capabilities like machine learning, autonomy, distributed networking, and multi-modal sensor fusion. We need a Junior EE that can work with loosely defined requirements and dynamically create thorough and concise documentation.
  • Structured Thinker and Problem Solver - You can distill complexity into its essential, digestible components. You're not just rinse-and-repeating. You are analyzing and evaluating each step of the process for improvement and automation.
  • 360 Degree Leader - We are a non-hierarchical organization with a matrix structure that is dynamic and evolving. We expect you to be self-aware enough to recognize your position of unstated leadership. We need a junior engineer to absorb knowledge and find areas to make an impact.
  • Experience with oscilloscope, multimeter, power supplies.
  • Experience with circuit design and simulation (SPICE).
  • Ability to describe your contributions to a technical project in detail.
  • Solid understanding of core electrical engineering principles.
  • Ability to comprehend complex problems.
  • A strong motivation to analyze and improve Forterra's design and test processes.
  • Strong written and verbal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong critical thinking skills.
  • Experience with CAD tools (e.g., Altium, Cadence, KiCAD).
  • Hands-on experience in a lab environment using lab and test equipment.
  • History of technical projects with a deep understanding of how they work.
  • An enthusiastic attitude towards learning and taking on challenges.
  • A willingness to grow and adapt design strategies and expectations.
  • A passion for robotics or vehicle autonomy.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 0-3 years of work as an Electrical Engineer.
