Job Purpose:

To manage and develop the Gateways facilities, processes, and customs clearance services for all inbound and outbound movements within the country, to provide a safe and secure working environment and meet agreed cost and performance standards and targets. Contribute to the effective interface with DHL Aviation, especially relating to Customs clearance and Gateway activities

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Manage all operational Gateway activity for the Country, ensuring a safe and secure workplace and the achievement of legally compliant Customs import and export performance to DHL standards.
  • Ensure that shipment sorting, containerization and pipeline visibility achieves agreed standards and levels of accuracy, including the checkpoints relating to shipments on-hold and other exceptions.
  • Identify options and implement-approved actions to optimize service and cost performance in the Customs clearance activities.
  • Maintain regular and appropriate contact with Customs at operational levels and actively seek to identify and implement enhanced practices to improve DHL’s Customs clearance performance at import and export.
  • Proactively contribute to and support service and operational cost improvement initiatives through the continuous performance and productivity evaluation of the Gateway.
  • Plan facilities with current and future business requirements.
  • Establish and maintain day-to-day contact with Aviation management, ensuring agreed actions are undertaken against key performance measures to integrate Country Operations and Aviation processes and networks.
  • Ensure the effective implementation and deployment of Regional and Country programs, projects and initiatives, and the realization of agreed business benefits within the context of Gateway activities.
  • Manage external supplier performance with sufficient cost controls to meet agreed budget expectations.
  • Set security operation standards, in association with the Security Manager, to prevent a breach of security and ensure that investigations are thorough and appropriate actions are taken.
  • Optimize manpower and resources within the Gateway to ensure that target levels of productivity and performance are achieved and sustained within cost parameters.
  • Identify commercial opportunities and support the business acquisition process, where appropriate, both directly with customers and in conjunction with DHL sales personnel to satisfy customer demand for quality inbound service.
  • Ensure that the team is provided with clear direction and performance standards and is staffed, trained, and motivated to meet set targets. Perform the LEADS process regularly for direct reports to manage individual performance and career aspirations.
  • In conjunction with Human Resources and Line trainers, ensure employees in Gateways are trained and developed to meet business and succession needs and ensure that adequate manpower is planned and in place.
  • Support the business acquisition process and provide after sales support as required to achieve revenue and profitability targets.
  • As security is a vital and integral part of our business and as such contributes to its overall success, line managers are responsible for compliance to DHL security policies and procedures.

Qualifications, Experience and Competencies:

Qualifications:

  • BA Degree or equivalent.
  • Proven business acumen.
  • Experience in implementing change.
  • Knowledge of the local regulatory environment.
  • Good knowledge of project management.

Experience:

  • Min 5-7 years management experience in a service-related role, preferably in the Air Express Industry
  • Logistics and Supply Chain Management: Understanding of logistics principles, supply chain dynamics, and transportation management.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Familiarity with international trade regulations, customs laws, and import/export procedures.
  • Technology Proficiency: Knowledge of logistics software, tracking systems, and data analytics tools.
  • Market Trends: Awareness of industry trends, market conditions, and competitive landscape.
