Description:

The Medical Assistant will work with other members of Semmes Murphey Clinic to provide patient services and is expected to participate in the appropriate team activities with the objective of providing a high standard of patient and clinical service. The Medical Assistant's primary responsibility is to assist physicians and nurses in the examination and treatment of patients. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential responsibility satisfactorily. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepares rooms, equipment and supplies for examination of patients; cleans and sterilizes instruments
  • Interviews patients, measures vital signs (pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight and height), and records information in patient chart; reports abnormal values to nurse and/or provider
  • Assists physician with instruments and materials during examinations
  • Performs staple and suture removal and wound care using aseptic technique
  • Gives injections or treatments and performs routine laboratory tests
  • Maintains awareness of comfort and safety needs of patient, and provides compassionate care
  • Helps coordinate patient referrals by scheduling outside appointments, tests and procedures
  • Completes time-sensitive precertifications for tests and procedures
  • Accurately keys data into computer to maintain office and patient records
  • Works collaboratively with nurse to facilitate efficient clinic workflow and to ensure quality patient care and physician satisfaction
  • Complies with HIPAA and OSHA requirements
Requirements:

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & CREDENTIALS

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of Medical Assistant Program
  • Current Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) designation
  • BLS certification

PREFERRED

  • One (1) year experience in an outpatient/clinic environment

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Word), electronic medical records (EMR) and other software
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to write clearly and informatively while editing work for spelling and grammar errors; communicates effectively and professionally with patients, visitors, physicians and coworkers
  • Ability to manage difficult or emotional patient situations with empathy, speaking clearly and persuasively in positive and negative situations
  • Can provide excellent customer service with a high level of confidentiality and discretion
  • Can balance team and individual responsibilities and contribute to building a positive team spirit
  • Ability to manage and complete various responsibilities in a timely manner within a fast paced environment
  • Strong organization skills with attention to detail
  • Adaptable to changes in the work environment, dealing with frequent changes, delays, or unexpected events
  • Possesses understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form; able to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

These physical demands are representative of the physical requirements necessary for an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. While performing these responsibilities the employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is required to sit and stand for long periods of time and have the capability for occasional overhead and low reaching. The employee is often required to use their hands and fingers, to handle or feel surgical instruments, and use a computer. Physical strength for equipment needs and patient care activities require the employee to be able to lift and/or move at least 50 pounds. Visual and auditory acuity for timely response and patient care assessment activities is required with the ability to move quickly in response to patient needs. Response to actual emergencies/disasters or drills occasionally required.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Both nonhazardous and hazardous equipment is present. This position involves Category 1 occupational exposure to blood and other potentially infectious body fluids and material. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Interaction with others is constant and interruptive.
