Position Summary

The Director of Design Technology will lead the charge in shaping our technological vision and driving innovation across our design practice. This strategic role requires a unique blend of design expertise, technological acumen, and leadership skills to elevate our firm's capabilities and set new industry standards. The Director will lead the firm's digital practice, overseeing the implementation of computational design, data, and visualization strategies while fostering a culture of continuous learning and technological advancement.


The ideal candidate will bring a proven track record in computational design, BIM, data visualization, and digital integration, along with strong interpersonal and mentoring skills. A passion for innovation, collaborative spirit, and a commitment to continuous learning are essential. This individual will have the ability to align technology strategies with business objectives, driving measurable outcomes and elevating firm-wide initiatives.


Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Innovation

  • Develop and evolve the firm's design technology roadmap in alignment with strategic objectives.
  • Identify and integrate emerging tools in AI, computational design, visualization, and automation.
  • Present innovation strategies and outcomes to internal and external stakeholders.

Team and Change Management

  • Lead and grow a high-performing team of design technologists and digital specialists.
  • Build a culture of learning through mentorship, structured development, and collaboration.
  • Champion firm-wide adoption of new tools and workflows through clear education and communication.

Project and Process Integration

  • Standardize best practices and ensure consistency across project teams.
  • Work closely with project managers to optimize workflow efficiency and profitability.
  • Serve as a primary contact for digital design solutions throughout project lifecycles.

Visibility and Representation

  • Represent Ayers Saint Gross at industry conferences, within publications, and professional organizations.
  • Collaborate with Marketing and Business Development teams to strengthen the design technology presence within RFPs and client materials.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in architecture, design technology, computational design or related field.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in design technology, BIM management, computational design, or related roles within architecture or design firms. Experience within interdisciplinary firms is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of the full design and construction process, with familiarity across key stakeholder roles.
  • Proficiency in BIM (Revit, Rhino. Inside), computational tools (Grasshopper, Dynamo, Python, C#), visualization software (Enscape, VRay, Twinmotion, Unreal), and automation workflows.
  • Strong understanding of interoperability between design software platforms (Revit, Rhino, SketchUp, AutoCAD, GIS, Power BI).
  • Experience with AI-assisted design, scripting, workflow automation, and common data management practices.
  • Awareness of design performance analysis software (Climate Studio, OneClick, Tally, Forma).
  • Proven ability to lead hybrid teams, mentor and engage with staff at all levels, and drive technology adoption.
  • Excellent communication, relationship building, and change management skills with a collaborative and inclusive leadership style.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Autodesk Certified Professional, LEED, WELL) are a plus.

The salary range for this position is $90,000-120,000 annually. The actual salary offered for this position will vary depending on multiple factors including the candidate's qualification, education, position knowledge, work experience, skills, ability, work location, and internal incumbent compensation for similar roles. We do not anticipate individuals hired into this position will start at or near the top half of the range listed; the decision will be based on each individual case. The salary range listed above does not include other compensation elements such as discretionary bonus opportunities, employee stock ownership grants, paid time off, medical insurance, and other wage and benefit opportunities.
