Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama, four years of related professional experience and possession of a valid driver’s license and maintenance of a driving record sufficient to maintain insurance coverage with the University of South Alabama. Current Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response certification or must obtain within 6 months of employment. Passage of a physical exam including respiratory pulmonary test sufficient for SCBA use. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
Current Hazardous Materials CDL is preferred.
Job Description Summary
The University of South Alabama’s department of Safety and Environmental Compliance is seeking to hire an Environmental Regulatory Compliance Officer. Interested candidates should apply to be considered.
Essential Functions
These are the job duties required of the position.
Essential Functions
- Prepares ADEM, EPA permit applications, other reports and required document submissions as required.
- Performs inspections/audits of University’s academic and healthcare facilities to insure compliance with ADEM, EPA and University requirements.
- Monitors and documents regulatory compliance with state and federal regulatory laws and regulations associated with the University’s Safety and Environmental Compliance programs.
- Researches new environmental regulations and changes to existing regulations.
- Prepares and submits Notification of Regulated Waste Activity and biannual reports and updates associated contingency plans.
- Assists with the development of the University’s Hazard Communication program, chemical and occupational safety training initiatives.
- Performs investigations into the cause of any reported hazardous materials incident on any University campus as requested.
- Assists in the operation of the University’s Treatment, Storage, and Disposal facility to include manifest generation and hazardous waste disposal bid coordination.
- Provides training and material expertise to University departments on environmental policies and practices.
- Performs any additional activity necessary to protect the health and safety of the University Community.
- Requires the immediate halt or suspension of practices or conditions that have been determined to constitute an immediate and serious risk of harm or death to others or a threat to the environment in emergency situations when required to do so by regulation.
- Maintains record keeping for reimbursement purposes for each of the University academic and healthcare divisions served for department services.
- Serves as the University’s Safety Officer in absence of department management as needed.
- Provides support for all University of South Alabama locations, including USA Health system, and must be willing to travel to different campus locations.
- Regular and prompt attendance.
- Ability to work schedule as defined and additional hours as required.
