Job Summary
Undergraduate research assistants undertake visual analysis and historical research working on the Language and Home team. Students analyze magazine advertisements and home catalogs for evidence of language change over time. Using digital materials, they document home spaces from the 1930s and 1940s. Students work under the guidance of Patrick Lee Lucas to process materials, meeting weekly to learn and cement research protocols and then, later, work more independently to fulfill their tasks. Students average between 5-10 hours per week engaged in this work. The tasks accomplished by undergraduate research assistants will help with the completion of a manuscript to be written by Dr. Lucas and his research partner, Dr. Allison Birkette (Department of Linguistics, College of Arts and Sciences). Students will walk away from this research experience having gained valuable skills in working with historic images as well as techniques for analysis and dissemination of visual research findings woven together with written work products.
