Overview

This Senior Research Specialist position at the Institutional Antiracism and Accountability (IARA) Project, directed by Professor Khalil Gibran Muhammad, will contribute to research and policy analysis focused on health equity and history of medicine. This position will play a key role in the final stage of the Truth, Reconciliation, Healing, and Transformation (TRHT) Archival Research Project.

The TRHT Research Project is a landmark initiative in partnership with the American Medical Association (AMA). Looking at the AMA archives in Chicago, this project examines the historical roots of racial disparities in American healthcare to develop actionable strategies for restorative justice and health equity. The Senior Research Specialist will serve as the primary writer in the project’s final report, in addition to conducting in-depth archival research and analysis.

This is a full-time remote position for a 6-month term.

• Writing
  Serve as the primary writer of the project’s final report, using regular memos produced in the past year’s research.
  Develop recommendations for restorative justice to address systemic barriers and promote health equity.
• Research & Analysis
  Analyze historical harms resulting from past AMA policies and practices, including the societal contexts in which these harms occurred.
  Coordinate with AMA archivists to find, identify, and review historical data, evaluating the influence of past policies.
  Leads Research Assistants, if any are hired, in conducting archival research, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and alignment with project goals.
  
  
• Project Coordination
  Develop a comprehensive plan for the writing of the project’s final report, setting and monitoring writing/editing deadlines and deliverables in coordination with the PI
  Participate in weekly check-ins, strategy meetings, and debrief discussions with the project team.
  Perform a variety of routine tasks related to organizing research materials and document control, day-to-day project support, and other duties as needed.
  
  
• Development
  Engage in independent scholarly activities aligned with the researcher's intellectual interests and expertise.
  Support the development of new initiatives by contributing to the preparation and writing of grant proposals.
  Attend events and conferences presenting on the report’s findings, alongside other team members.
  Contribute to the dissemination strategy and planning in advance of the report’s publication.
  
  

ESSENTIAL Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills, Competencies, and Abilities

• Research Methodologies – Expertise in experimental design, data collection, and
  advanced policy analysis.
• Anthropological and/or historical background – Strong foundation in anthropological and historical research, especially concerning the history of race and racism in the U.S.
• Technical Writing – Ability to carry out high quality research-based writing, particularly in translating complex historical and policy analysis into accessible, compelling narratives for diverse audiences.
• Project Management – Experience in managing multi-phase research projects, timelines,
  and deliverables.
• Archival Research — Experience conducting archival research, including working with primary source documents, institutional records, and historical databases.

PREFERRED Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Experience, and Other Education

• Familiarity with grant writing and developing proposals for research funding or institutional partnerships.
  Comfort presenting findings to both academic and public audiences, including in conferences or professional convenings.
