Position: Project Design Manager – Pharma Capital Projects

Position Summary:

The Spear Group has an exciting opportunity for a life sciences / pharma experienced Project Design Manager (PDM) to be part of the latest pharma facilities design best practices. The successful individual will lead project teams through the Front-End Loading Project Design Management Process. The Project Design Manager will be responsible for managing Front-End Loading (FEL) best practices on capital projects within their assignment, delivering right-first-time assets.

The PDM shall exhibit strong organizational, interpersonal, collaboration and communication skills to support capital project teams during design development and capital management process decisions making. The candidate should have technical experience in the areas of design specification development, schedule and resource planning, and knowledge of Biologic, Sterile Vaccine equipment design and capital project design.

Position Responsibilities:

  • The principal focus will be to fulfill the role as a Project Design Manager (PDM) on capital projects; responsible for managing, leading and coordinating technical scope delivery of the Front-End Loading (FEL) phase.
  • The PDM is responsible for leading teams to develop technical options, facility layouts, scope development and technical discipline coordination during Front-End Loading to support the specific business case. The work could be supporting a large capital project or lead for medium to smaller projects in a portfolio.
  • Partner internally ON THE OWNER’S SIDE with Engineering integrated project team and externally with Site Operations, Global Safety and Environment and Quality partners.
  • During early phases of Front-End Loading the Project Design Manager will lead site and facility evaluations, assist in collecting stakeholder Critical to Success and Voice of the Business inputs, lead conceptual scoping, options analysis, competitive scope assessment.
  • Assure project adherence following standard work practices and assuring consistent application of Procedures, Guides, and Standards on capital projects. Integrate industry regulations as well as our company's Safety, Environmental & Quality requirements.
  • Coordinate meetings, deliverables, schedule and assembly into a Front-End Loading predefined package (Concept, Basis of Design)
  • Oversee external engineering design firm activities and integration with the project teams. Create effective team dynamics by high performance teaming methodologies
  • Support transition of design solutions from Front-End Loading to EPCM execution
  • Support Front-End Loading assessment review process of design deliverables
  • Implement Lean Front-End process including Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA) Target Value Design, Pull Planning, Modular Design, Virtual Design & Construction (VDC)
  • Participate and or lead the development of organizational initiatives and or new standard work procedures related to Front End Loading delivery.

Position Requirements – Experience/Skills/Education:

  • Bachelor of Science degree (or higher) in Engineering
  • Minimum 8 years’ experience in engineering, technology and/or manufacturing within Pharmaceutical/Biotech industry.
  • Familiarity with Capital Management stage gate process, engineering design principles, and leading high performing effective teams.
  • Familiarity with hygienic design principles.
  • Creative, innovative, thinks outside of the box, self-motivated, applies problem-solving skills, and solid base in engineering fundamentals.
  • Demonstrated leadership and teamwork skills. Ability to get results in a cross functional environment and has ability to effectively collaborate with and influence partners.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Project/Time Management skills which deliver on-time and quality work.
