SUPERVISOR, MACHINE SHOP

OVERVIEW:

The Supervisor, Machine Shop oversees daily machine shop shift operations to ensure efficient, high-quality production while maintaining safety standards and adhering to schedules. This role is instrumental in delivering high-quality products on time and fostering a safe and productive work environment. You will be involved in coordinating with machinists, managing workflows, implementing process improvements, interdepartmental collaboration, and people management.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Safety and Compliance

  • Ensure safe operation of the machine shop and painting area by enforcing adherence to KSB GIW safety policies, conducting safety training, organizing toolbox meetings, and supporting employee led safety committees
  • Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety standards and regulations
  • Promote good housekeeping practices to maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work environment

Team Leadership

  • Lead and supervise shift leaders, machinists, and other shop personnel
  • Assist in developing and implementing management policies and tools to create a highly motivated and engaged workforce, fostering a safe and productive work environment
  • Actively participate in hiring, training, and mentoring of employees to enhance skills and performance
  • Conduct machinist performance evaluations and address employee concerns in collaboration with Superintendent, Production Manager, and Human Resources
  • Implement and monitor KSB GIW disciplinary policies, including attendance policies and point systems, in collaboration with Human Resources

Operational Supervision

  • Supervise daily machine shop shift operations
  • Collaborate with machine shop supervisors, assembly supervisors, paint supervisors, foundry supervisors, and other shift supervisors.
  • Work directly with superintendent to balance headcount on each of the four 12-hour shifts to keep each constraint CNC machine fully operational
  • Coordinate with machine shop trainer to keep a constant stream of machinists in job shadowing or cross-training
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering, the Machine Shop programming office and production teams to optimize machining processes
  • Ensure adherence to production schedules and achievement of weekly production targets, with explanations for any deviations
  • Analyze production data to identify areas for improvement and implement lean manufacturing or other efficiency-enhancing practices
  • Ensure efficient use of resources to reduce waste and control expenses
  • Collaborate with the maintenance team to implement Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) practices, including preventive and planned maintenance schedules, as well as repair schedules, to ensure equipment reliability and minimize downtime
  • Evaluate and recommend new equipment or technologies to improve production efficiency

Quality Assurance

  • Monitor KSB GIW quality assurance policies to ensure all products meet specified quality standards
  • Address defects or quality issues promptly and effectively
  • Monitor and complete scheduled rework and X1 notification backlogs, maintaining sustainable levels to meet production targets and delivery schedules.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE (minimum required)

Education

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in human resources, manufacturing technology, or related fields (preferred)
  • Industry-recognized certifications (e.g., CNC programming, Six Sigma, or Lean Manufacturing) are advantageous

Experience

  • 3-5 years of experience in machining, manufacturing, or metalworking environments
  • Previous supervisory or managerial roles within a machine shop
  • Hands-on experience with CNC and manual machining operations

Technical Skills

  • Working knowledge of machining processes, materials, and tooling
  • Familiarity with interpreting blueprints, technical drawings, and CAD models
  • Proficiency in CNC machinery, lathes, mills, grinders, and other manufacturing equipment
  • Knowledge of software for CNC programming and shop management (e.g., Mastercam, AutoCAD, MS Office, ERP systems)
  • Understanding of lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, or other efficiency methodologies
  • Experience implementing and adhering to ISO standards or similar quality frameworks

Leadership and Management Skills

  • Strong leadership abilities to motivate and manage teams
