The Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University seeks an Outreach Coordinator for community-building, collaboration, and tool demonstration with the Applied Social Media Lab, a hub for engineering & researching software solutions for the future of social media and online communication. The Outreach Coordinator will join the Center's world-class community of scholars and practitioners, and work in close collaboration with the Berkman Klein Center's staff and the Lab's team of researchers, product managers, engineers and faculty to build relationships around a range of interdisciplinary, cutting-edge platforms and tools related to the progression of transparency, safety, privacy, and connection on social media.
Position Description
As Outreach Coordinator, you will:
- Coordinate all partnership and product improvement activities, including finding and facilitating opportunities for the Lab to demo, test, co-design, and promote the lab's social media tooling, with the overall goal to target and better support user needs.
- Understand and facilitate iterative co-design processes, including a working knowledge of best practices for organizing events, communicating across difference, gathering feedback, and maintaining regular follow-up with stakeholders.
- Communicate with and serve as a point of contact for largely external partners, including community partners, academic stakeholders, nonprofits, industry collaborators, and public figures.
- Experiment with innovative tools and methodologies to enhance engagement in workshops and convenings, leveraging both Lab-developed technologies and external resources.
- Coordinate between the Applied Social Media Lab and BKC workstreams to identify and facilitate opportunities for collaboration, knowledge exchange, and cross-pollination of ideas.
- Potentially research and prepare briefing and background materials for educational program sessions, meetings, and events; may supervise events, workshops, and demos as needed.
Basic QualificationsFive or more years of related experience. Education beyond high school may count toward experience.
Additional Qualifications and SkillsWe are looking for people who are/have: - Proactive, highly organized, detail-oriented, with the ability to remain calm under pressure.
- Effective communication skills, including solid writing, editing, and proofreading skills, as well as keen coordination and project management skills.
- Strong comfort with public speaking, relationship-building and group mediation; further comfort with survey design, focus groups and motivational interviewing skills.
- The ability to work flexibly in independent and team environments.
- Motivated to thrive in a committed, collaborative community that encourages creativity and supports deep inquiry - and pursue "cold" connections with potential collaborators and partners.
- Organizational and practical work experience for non-governmental or academic organizations a plus.
- Knowledge of, or prior work experience with Internet, technology policy, social media related issues, and/or software development/product management is a plus. Experience in marketing, communications, public relations, and/or product management are also a bonus.
Working ConditionsBased on the changing needs of the Center, the Outreach Coordinator may be called upon for other tasks at short notice.
Additional InformationThis is a term appointment currently expected to extend through June 30, 2026, subject to funding and departmental need.
