Job Description/Responsibilities

The Community Pharmacist and Clinical Instructor who joins our team will be the Pharmacist in Charge (PIC) in SIUE Health Services pharmacy and a Clinical Instructor in the School of Pharmacy. The qualified candidate will lead and manage pharmacy operations, ensure safe and effective medication use, teach in the PharmD program, and provide specialized clinical services tailored to the unique healthcare needs of young adults, including primary/urgent care, reproductive health, and maintenance of mental health. This position combines pharmacy practice with coordination of coursework for first year pharmacy students and teaching patient care skills and self-care topics. The pharmacist will work closely with other healthcare professionals in SIUE Health Services to optimize therapeutic outcomes, counsel patients on medications, and ensure the provision of high-quality, evidence-based care. This PIC will be in charge of implementing software/systems to manage dispensing and billing.

What You'll Do:

Pharmacist in Charge (PIC) Responsibilities (50%)

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the pharmacy, ensuring compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee and ensure the safe and effective dispensing of medications, including administering immunizations and management of controlled substances.
  • Handle patient complaints and resolve issues regarding medications, prescription errors, or customer service concerns.
  • Receive verbal, phone and written medication orders and use QS1 pharmacy system to fill prescriptions.
  • Monitor and mitigate drug interactions and use drug information resources to assure good use of medications for optimal patient care.
  • Ensure proper inventory management, including ordering, receiving, and maintaining stock levels of medications.
  • Oversee implementation and operation of technology systems to manage dispensing and insurance billing/reimbursement.
  • Conduct regular audits and ensure proper documentation and reporting of medication dispensing practices.
  • Maintain relationships with healthcare providers, suppliers, and regulatory bodies to ensure optimal service and compliance.
  • Mentor and support pharmacy students placed on clinical rotations in Health Services, ensuring high standards of practice and customer service.

Teaching (30%)
  • In collaboration with fellow faculty member, co-coordinate course work related to community pharmacy topics and skills.
  • Teach in the classroom and provide course continuity weekly for first year students, including design/delivery of teaching content, facilitating skills learning, grading, and conducting course management and monitoring.
  • Provide vision and guidance within the area of Community and Ambulatory Care Practice.
  • Mentor students and preceptors.
  • Participate in the experiential education of pharmacy students.
  • Engage in service (School, University, Professional, Community) to support our mission.

Clinical Practice in Young Adult Care emphasizing Reproductive and Mental Health (10%)
  • Provide patient counseling and education on the safe and effective use of medications related to reproductive and mental health, including contraceptives; antibiotics and STI prevention/treatment; antidepressants, anti-anxiety agents, and ADHD treatment options; and other relevant therapies.
  • Offer advice on preventive health care for young adults, including vaccination programs, sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention, and reproductive health education.
  • Assess and review patient medications for potential drug interactions, contraindications, and side effects, particularly in the context of young adult health.
  • Promote and support family planning services, including emergency contraception and counseling on various birth control methods.
  • Serve as a resource for young adults on topics such as sexual health, menstrual health, and overall wellness, ensuring nonjudgmental and inclusive care.
  • Conduct routine screenings and public health information campaigns on campus in support of campus and student wellness.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals in the clinic, including nurse practitioners, counselors, nurses, medical assistants, and others to develop personalized care plans for patients.

Additional Duties (10%)

Stay updated on the latest advancements in pharmacotherapy. Opportunities to participate in and/or teach in the SIUE Teaching Certificate program through the school of pharmacy.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree (Pharm. D.) from an accredited U.S. school/college of pharmacy
  • Active pharmacy license in the state of Illinois (or eligible for licensure in Illinois)

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in the community pharmacy setting, including working with dispensing software, pharmacy operations, and inventory management
  • Experience in teaching and/or precepting students
  • Clinical Practice in Young Adult Care emphasizing Reproductive and Mental Health

Terms of Appointment:

Beginning 7/1/2025-6/30/2025 with a possibility of renewal.
