Assistant Surgical Services Director - Military veterans preferred

Tennessee Donor Services (TDS) is looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic team member to join us to save lives!!  Our mission at TDS is to save lives through organ and tissue donation, and we want professionals on our team that will embrace this important work!!  Tennessee Donor Services is seeking an Assistant Surgical Services Director to join our team!  This position will assist in the day-to-day management and coordination of organ recovery activities. The Assistant Surgical Services Director will be responsible for the oversight of surgical related activities related to the allocation, distribution, surgical removal, and preservation of organs recovered for research and/or transplantation. This role will coordinate the call schedule to ensure adequate staffing, provide oversight for all aspects of orientation and ongoing training of staff regarding preservation by collaborating with clinical training department for the development, implementation, and delivery of didactic training of recovery policies and procedures. 

The Assistant Surgical Services Director will provide daily supervision and support to the Surgical Recovery Coordinators and provide feedback on employee performance and participates in the evaluation process as needed and ensures that quality recovery practices are employed, and that policies, procedures, and local processes are adhered to. Some travel and on-call duties are required.

  Key responsibilities this position will perform include:

1. Provides day-to-day oversight and leadership of the Surgical Recovery staff.
    
    
2. Assumes primary responsibility for the renal preservation process including pumping and pump transport, in accordance with company and UNOS policies. 
    
    
3. Coordinates the call schedule to ensure adequate coverage is provided for designated service area (DSA). Performs extensive on-call responsibilities to assist with the activities related to the donor recovery. Primary on-call responsibilities will occur in assigned region or office where employed. Increased donor activity, staffing shortages, etc. may require assuming on-call responsibilities outside the primary area. 
    
    
4. Coordinates and assists in the surgical recovery, preservation, packaging, and delivery of organs and specimens in conjunction with transplant surgeons and/or organ recovery coordinators, research facilities or coroner’s offices in compliance with company policy, , and UNOS requirements. 
    
    
5. Serves as a resource for the organization handling education, in-services, and assisting with reviewing staff job competencies. 
    
    
6. Provides oversight for all aspects of orientation and ongoing training of staff responsible for preservation duties. 
    
    
7. Collaborates with Hospital Development to provide in-services at donor hospitals related to surgical organ recovery. 
    
    
8. Assists with quality processes such as investigations, root cause analysis, process improvement, and PDSAs related to preservation. Participates in internal and external committees to improve organ utilization. 
    
    
9. May first assist on any surgical recovery cases as needed
    
    
10. Coordinates and assists with organ allocation, including kidney and liver placement, distribution, and transportation of organs for transplantation and/or research in accordance with company and UNOS policies. 
     
     
11. Receives import organ offers and facilitates communication of information between host donor program and local transplant program (if applicable). Coordinates and assists with travel arrangements for transplant teams, organs for transplant and/or research, and specimens to laboratories, as appropriate, in accordance with company policy, UNOS policy, , and ME office. 
     
     
12. Responsible for the materials management oversight of all related clinical supplies necessary for the organ recovery process. Maintains sterile supplies and donor equipment bags. Maintains the organ clinical supply room as appropriate. Handles and maintain supplies per OSHA standards and company policy. Maintains the constant state of readiness (clean and orderly). 
     
     
13. Responsible for data collection, analysis and reporting as needed for regulatory compliance in adherence to company policy, and UNOS standards regarding documentation. 
     
     
14. Assists with assigned projects and performs other duties related to the clinical, hospital services, and public education activities of the company. 
     
     
15. Assists with organ specific research projects. 
     
     
16. Responsible for regular review of relevant clinical policies and protocols to ensure current practice and compliance with regulatory requirements. 
     
     
17. Performs other duties as assigned.
      

The ideal candidate will have the following attributes:  

• Bachelor’s degree in related field required, health related experience in lieu of a degree may be considered  
    
• 5+ years leadership experience managing staff
   
• 7+ years surgical technician experience
   
• 2+ years organ donation experience
   
• Certified Scrub Tech, EMT or RN/LVN preferred 
    
• Valid driver’s license with ability to pass MVR underwriting requirements
   
• Working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office applications to include Word and PowerPoint is required
