Title: Learning Specialist

Unit: Part-Time MCCC Professional Staff

Department: Student Affairs, Academic Centers for Enrichment (ACE)

Reports to: Director of Academic Support Programs

General Summary: The Academic Centers for Enrichment (ACE) promotes academic access, engagement, and achievement for the students of Middlesex Community College (MCC). Our department promotes the college's goal to create lifelong learners from all backgrounds by focusing on study skills and independent learning. At ACE, students find resources and support from peers that help to enhance their learning and academic performance. Resources such as tutoring, skill workshops, discussion workshops, and supplemental instruction are instrumental in filling critical subject and skill gaps for our student population.

The Part-Time Learning Specialist is a knowledgeable, experienced, and creative leader committed to inclusive excellence. The Learning Specialist is responsible for the oversight of tutoring for individualized and group student learning sessions in the Academic Centers for Enrichment. The Learning Specialist is responsible for training, supervising, coaching, mentoring and evaluating the ACE Student Leaders.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Train, supervise, and evaluate ACE Student Leaders in accordance with the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) Guidelines and International Center Supplemental Instruction (ICSI) Guidelines
  • Provide expertise and peer tutor development training in pedagogy, study skills, and student engagement.
  • Develop and facilitate workshops for the professional development of our ACE Student Leaders.
  • Collaborate and communicate with faculty to build academic support partnerships.
  • Provide classroom support by offering workshops on study skills and learning strategies.
  • Serve as a mentor to ACE Student Leaders by providing support, resources, and opportunities for development.
  • Use Navigate to manage student appointments and track user data.
  • Assist in the preparation of the college's application to maintain certification by CRLA & ICSI.
  • Be an ACE representative at MCC events
  • Other duties as assigned.


Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Education or relevant field of study
  • Subject knowledge supported by, or evident in, a combination of experience and education in one or more of the following areas: English, Writing, Reading, ELL, Sciences, Mathematics, Computer Science
  • Experience tutoring at the secondary or post-secondary level
  • Knowledge of tutoring techniques and learning strategies
  • Knowledge of small group and peer tutoring methodologies

Preferred skills:

  • Master's Degree in Education or related field of study
  • Experience working with community college students
  • Bilingual skills, a plus
  • College Reading and Learning (CRLA) certified or knowledge of program requirements


Additional Information:

Hourly Rate: $35.31 per hour in accordance with MCCC Collective Bargaining Agreement

Location: Lowell Campus with occasional travel to Bedford as needed

Hours: Approximately 18.5 hours per week, most of the hours are between 10:00am to 5pm, Monday through Friday. A combination of timeframes and days of the week may be arranged based on the needs of the center and/or the learning specialist. Attendance at Friday meetings once per month from 9:00am-12:00pm is required. Some summer hours are available.
