ASRT, Inc. provides scientific, information management, management consulting, bioinformatics, and administrative program support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other Federal and private sector clients. The successful candidate will be a full-time employee of ASRT, Inc. and will be assigned to the Division of Core Laboratory Services and Response (DCLSR), National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic and Infectious Diseases (NCEZID), at the CDC, 1600 Clifton Road, Atlanta, GA.
SCOPE OF WORK
The Laboratory Technician will provide support for non-research biological science work or support work in various scientific and public health areas associated with numerous biological agents.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform non-research biological science work or biological science support work in various scientific and public health areas associated with numerous biological agents.
- Perform recurring, well-precedent standard lab techniques. Performs and monitors the full range of specialized tests and non-routine procedures for which there are standard methods and techniques.
- Sample Collection:
- Collect water samples from various locations, including areas within the Comparative Medicine Building (CMB) that house animals.
- Microbiological Testing:
- Perform membrane filtration and culture techniques to test for Total Heterotrophic Plate Count (HPC) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
- Conduct IDEXX Colilert testing for total coliforms and Escherichia coli (E. coli).
- Water Quality Parameters:
- Measure and analyze pH, conductivity, hardness, and free chlorine levels in water samples.
- Pipet Calibration:
- Perform precise calibrations of pipettes using designated pipette calibration instrumentation.
- Must be highly organized with strong attention to detail.
- Maintain strict compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) throughout the calibration process.
Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry, basic medical science, or environmental laboratory science, or
- 2-5 years of equivalent experience
Required:
- Previous laboratory experience in water quality testing experience
- Ability to calculate results, take accurate measurement, and perform calibration techniques.
- Experience with membrane filtration equipment and methods for concentrating bacteria from water samples.
- Position requires Tuberculosis testing, wearing full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including an N95 respirator.
- Must be able to enter animal housing rooms as needed.
- Experience working with established SOPs across molecular and microbiologist techniques.
- Experience working with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for the preparation of memos and reports.
- Experience working with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
Desirable:
- Previous experience working in a similar role.
- Previous experience with "chain of custody" materials and transfers.
- Specific detailed knowledge of quality systems and regulatory requirements, handling of clinical specimens, and aseptic techniques.
Language Skills:
- The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
