JOB DESCRIPTION

Real-Time Trader Sr. 

Salary Grade: G05
Minimum  Midpoint  Maximum
$90,316 - $121,926 - $153,536

Given the financial nature of this position, this position has been defined as a position requiring a credit check.  Prior to being hired, promoted, or transferred into the position, the candidate must successfully pass a credit background check.  

SUMMARY: 

Ensures that PNMs projected electric customer load demand is met, around-the-clock, in the most economic and efficient manner while adhering to operating system constraints and industry or regulatory guidelines.  Maximizes OPN revenues through administration of PNM¿s wholesale power agreements with third parties and the aggressive marketing of wholesale power products and services in the real-time marketplace.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Implements real-time actions to insure stable and reliable operation of the Bulk Electric System

Responsible for ensuring compliance with the North American Electric Reliability Corporation Operating Standards and other regional standards

Projects the total hourly customer demand, including daily system peak

Procures economic, adequate, reliable resources to serve customer demand

Responds to generation outages by urgently procuring alternative economic resources

Procures economical spinning, operating and ready, system reserve requirements

Responds to generation disturbances within established regulatory, industry, reserve sharing groups, and company standards to assure a continuous supply of electricity to customers

Provides power schedule interchange information to the System Operator for use in Control Area administration

Negotiates product, price, quantity, terms, etc., under available agreements to buy, sell, or swap wholesale power with regional, national utilities, and other power marketing entities

Supports the Wholesale Power Marketing Team by developing leads to expand pre-scheduling, intermediate, and long-term market opportunities

Establishes and maintains positive business relationships with counterparts at regional or national utilities and marketer organizations

Establishes and maintains tracking mechanisms to properly confirm and document billings, etc.

Resolves interchange scheduling and pricing disputes with utility and power marketing entity counterparts

Administers wholesale power contracts

Secures transmission paths as necessary for power purchase and sale activities
Ability to direct the work of other Real-Time Traders and assist in training new employees and/or trainees as part of on-the-job training.

In-depth understanding of the competitive wholesale electricity marketplace, including the effects from market dynamics such as delivery limitations, regional supply and demand, daily or seasonal diversities, reliability aspects, fuel considerations, etc.

Advanced interpersonal skills to build and maintain positive business relationships with dozens of potential wholesale customers with competing business interests

Excellent analytical skills to properly assess complex technical and economic variables and the capability to make fast and accurate decisions based on the conclusions reached

Excellent negotiating skills

The ability to perform under considerable stress induced by a highly competitive environment, impending deadlines, emergency situations and  work rotating shifts covering 24 hours/day and 7 days/week, every day of the year with extra and/or irregular hours including weekend and holidays. 

Ability to adapt to revised schedules on short notice and changes in methods and priorities of work.

In-depth knowledge of the interconnected bulk power generation and transmission network and the operational aspects of that network

QUALIFICATIONS                   

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: 

Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university in Marketing, Business, Finance, Economics or Engineering with five to seven years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience related to the discipline.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

NERC System Operator Certification preferred.  

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:                  
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals

Ability to write routine reports and correspondence

Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: 
                 
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume

Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry

COMPUTER SKILLS:                  

In depth working knowledge of  personal computer and standard business office applications including Microsoft Office Suite, industry specific software and other related applications.

ANALYSIS AND PROBLEM-SOLVING ABILITY: 

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

SCOPE AND IMPACT:

Resulting work product will be used by the System Operator for operation of the Companys interconnected system and by the Energy Analysis group for billing and accounting purposes.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit up to 2/3 of the time.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

All of these duties are performed indoors and at a desk, operating office equipment.

SUMMARY:
