for our USDA Program in Kansas City

Job Description:

Security Engineer Work as part of the USDA Risk Management Agency (RMA) Security Operations Team to provide Security guidance for the enterprise technology environment, with the goals of maturing the agency?s infrastructure and application Security policy and technology frameworks, improving overall Security posture, and growing an agency-wide culture of Security awareness. Work with our Security capabilities to help refine and standardize the Security processes and procedures across the agency. Perform Security assessments on existing Security capabilities, and help develop roadmap to improve the agency?s Security posture. Serve as a Security advocate to other technology and business teams, and advise business owners and other key stakeholders on risks associated with current processes and potential changes. Provide expert advice during Security incidents, communicate mitigation strategies to both technical and non-technical audiences. Security Engineer is responsible for providing thought leadership and Security- related subject matter expertise around a wide range of technologies and business initiatives. The ideal candidate must possess extensive experience engineering secure computer/network systems, demonstrate excellent communication skills, and have a passion for Security.

Primary Job Duties:

- Serve as an information Security advisor to key technology and business stakeholders, establishing trust relationships through active engagement and collaboration
- Act in an advisory role in infrastructure design and acquisition to assess Security requirements and controls, and to ensure Security controls are implemented as planned
- Research and recommend tools to help manage Security analysis, process, and risk
- Provide mentoring and technical leadership to other members of the Security Operations Team Act as Security subject- matter expert, and provide third-level support and analysis, during and after Security incidents
- Perform gap analyses across the organization to identify and document risks, and to identify unnecessary complexity in existing processes and procedures
- Perform vulnerability risk assessments for identified vulnerabilities, and advise management on appropriate response strategies
- Develop and deliver Security roadmaps to communicate Security state and remediate or mitigate top risks across products and businesses
- Conduct Security reviews of infrastructure architectures to assess technical and business risk, identify threats and vulnerabilities, and propose solutions
- Create and maintain Security guidance to be used by analysts and administrators Remediate complex Security issues
- Participate in Security compliance audits as needed

Education and Required Skills:

- Bachelors Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field (4 additional years of experience in lieu of Degree) and a minimum of nine (9+) years of overall IT experience
- A few years of hands-on experience as a Security practitioner, implementing a variety of solutions across multiple disciplines
- At least three (2) years? experience with commercial and open source Security applications and technologies (e.g. malware prevention, DLP, IDS/IDP, SIEM, or vulnerability scanning), as well as related protocols and tools (e.g. SSH, SSL/TLS, snort, bro, port scanners, rootkit detectors, etc.)
- Security+ or higher certification required
- Experience with Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) capabilities and tools
- Experience with Security monitoring tools

Desired Qualifications:

- CISSP or CISM required
- Other certifications, such as (CEH, CCNA Security, GCIA, GCIH, GMON, GCFA) or similar Experience in Vulnerability Analysis
- Networking Experience
- Experience in a Cloud environment
- Linux Experience
- Application Security Experience


- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Moderate Risk Public Trust clearance
