POSITION SUMMARY

$25k Bonus
The Laboratory Cytotechnologist performs laboratory testing procedures and provides clinical result interpretation according to established procedures, ensuring quality standards are met.

The Cytotechnologist is a specially trained clinical technologist who duties include preparing microscopic slides of cell samples, examining all types of body specimens including fine needle aspirates, identifying abnormalities and providing interpretation for all patient samples that are screened. This position also is responsible for issuing the normal cytology reports and provides interpretation of abnormal cytology to pathologists.

The Cytotechnologist performs tests in compliance with established departmental standards. The Consultant reviews and verifies results to ensure data validity and interprets results. This position applies appropriate procedural techniques related to specimen procurement and handling, instrument operation, operator maintenance, application of universal precautions and inventory monitoring. This position participates in the evaluation of new equipment and troubleshoots equipment problems as needed.

The Cytotechnologist performs and documents quality control procedures and proficiency testing in accordance with established parameters and standards. This position works with the Laboratory Leadership and Pathologists' to resolve quality control, patient or procedural problems and recommends enhancements to laboratory procedures.

The Cytotechnologist works effectively with physician members of staff to accurately provide diagnostic results and works with minimal supervision.

This position supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts and demonstrating a commitment to team work and cooperation.

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in medical technology, chemical, physical or biological sciences or related field acceptable and certificate of completion in an accredited Cytotechnologist Program to the certifying agency (ASCP), required.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: CT (ASCP) (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) or equivalent, registry eligible and required from 6 months of hire date or transfer. Certification must be maintained if not grandfathered from the Board of Registry (BOR) and requires participation in 24 CEUs annually. BLSHCP required effective 1/1/2021, existing incumbents with HSAED will be required to renew with BLSHCP all new hires effective this same date are required to have BLSHCP within 6 months of hire or transfer.
EXPERIENCE: Prior experience preferred, but not required. Proficiency in Clinical Applications preferred at time of hire; incumbents within position will be trained appropriately and then skill will be required for this position within 30-60 days from date of hire.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
Demonstrates the ability to perform the department specific competencies as listed on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool.
Strict compliance with laboratory Fraud and Abuse policies and requirements is an employment condition.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Must have the ability to distinguish colors.
Potential for exposure to the hazards and risk of the hospital environment, including exposure to infectious disease, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous substances, and potential injury.
This position demands increased amounts of standing, bending and manual manipulation, as well as some light lifting up to 20lbs.
The department specific Assessment and Evaluation Tool lists the essential functions of this position.

Core competencies will be assessed primarily to the following patient population(s) served (with the exception of newborns): All diagnoses/conditions of patients admitted to the hospital.

This position reports to the Laboratory Leadership.
