Position Description: 

The material handler position is responsible for maintaining accurate inventory and scanning and issuing hooks to the proper finishing, packaging or shelf locations. Perform tasks with focus and accuracy to avoid errors and handle materials and inventory efficiently.    

Knowledge/Skill and Experience:

  • Must have basic reading and arithmetic skills to follow instructions and maintain simple records.  
  • Must be knowledgeable of scanning devices, spreadsheets, and be able to input data into a computer system.  
  • Level I hazardous materials training may be required.
  • Lift knowledge and experience preferred up to 50 LBS.  

Essential Duties:

  • Receive hooks to be plated and processed from H-Level stock areas for customer orders or for stocking requirements.
  • Pull orders from H-stock and warehouse for finishing jobs that are released daily from production planning. 
  • Work with the Finishing Manager and the production planning department on rush or special orders that need to be Plated in sequence and get those orders to the finishing floor. 
  • Responsible for scanning all boxes for H-Level orders being sent from Heat Treat and ensure that they are transferred through the computer system to the proper inventory locations. 
  • Move boxes to designated H-Level or warehouse staging location areas, for put away or issued to finishing.
  • Maintain accurate inventory by doing daily cycle counts of H-Stock using scanners and the computer to input information and print a put-away manifest and attach to skids. 
  • Uses the scales to weigh and print labels for boxes of hooks that have passed QC inspection. Labels are reprinted as needed.
  • Log and print pallet manifests and deliver materials to H-level sub-inventory stocking areas using pallet jack or lift truck.
  • Conduct daily safety inspections of forklift, Wave lift and other equipment used in the area.   
  • Works with the QC department with the correction and movement of wrong or defective hooks in boxes. Once these issues have been resolved and/or sorted the material handler will move items to the correct H-Level locations or finishing processes.
  • Observes all safety and good housekeeping regulations of the department and/or Company. In the department, good housekeeping consists of organizing staged hooks for finishing, keeping empty containers and trash picked up and ensuring all aisles are clear of debris and floors are swept.
  • Performs similar or less skilled duties in the department and other areas of the company when requested. 
  • Other duties as assigned.   

Physical Environment and Working Conditions: 

  • Position requires above average exertion. May be required to use hearing protection and participate in the hearing conservation program.
  • Must be able to work in an environment with exposure to toxic, caustic and acidic chemicals or dusty conditions.
  • Must be capable of distinguishing with a degree of accuracy unusual odors and fumes using sense of smell.
  • Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions and be mentally alert at all times. Good manual and visual dexterity are necessary.
  • Must be physically capable of frequently lifting and /or carrying up to 30 lbs. and up to 50 lbs. occasionally, with repeated overhead lifting or bending to stock and reach materials from shelves or pallets.
  • Able to bend, kneel, stoop and twist throughout the shift.  
  • Must be physically capable of standing and walking for up to 12 hours. 
  • Requires the ability to climb a 10-foot ladder to pull materials off the stock shelves and run a small material handling lift to a height of 15ft.
  • Must be able to wear all safety equipment required for the Finishing Department.
  • Must be able to reach upward, outward and overhead with arms and shoulders in order to push, pull and lift H-Level materials.
  • Must be willing and able to work varying hours and shifts.
