Systems Tech 5
T05 Union $51.94 Per Hour
SUMMARY:
Under limited supervision, inspects, tests, and maintains substation electrical equipment and performs other substation maintenance duties related to keeping buildings and grounds in good condition.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Inspects and tests equipment to ensure proper operation, utilizing such equipment as voltmeters, ammeters, and related electrical testing equipment
Installs and maintains substation, transmission, distribution, and metering equipment
Performs routine maintenance on substation equipment such as oil testing and replacement
Trains and instructs less experienced personnel in techniques of substation maintenance and other engineering duties by applying a full working knowledge of safe work procedures as outlined in the Safety Manual
Performs surveying and staking for new construction
Available to perform on call work as necessary
May serve as either dispatcher or switchman
Properly reports and maps substation related changes to equipment and lines
Paints, repairs, and maintains substation facilities
Performs other duties as assigned
COMPETENCIES:
Strong knowledge and understanding of electrical theory, transformer theory, math and drafting
Strong knowledge and understanding of safe and proper testing techniques
Strong knowledge and understanding of substation and line construction and maintenance
Ability to operate power tools and electrical testing equipment
Ability to recognize and communicate hazardous conditions
QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or GED with seven or more years of related experience completion of competency levels for System Technician 4, or equivalent combination of education and/or experience related to the discipline.
College level course work in an engineering discipline or related vocational training preferred.
Where incumbent is required to operate machinery and/or equipment covered under the State Motor Carrier Act, the incumbent must meet requirements of Part 391 of the Act (Driver Qualification) before operating such equipment.
CERTIFICATES, LICESNSE, REGISTRATIONS:
Job requirements include meeting and maintaining regulatory standards required for the position including passing any physiological qualifications required by the Department of Transportation or other agencies, and possession of a valid Commercial Drivers License. Must also have and maintain a driving record that meets the Company's standards.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry
ANALYSIS AND PROBLEM-SOLVING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with complex problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Ability to perform physical activity associated with climbing poles, such as pushing, pulling, lifting and bending. Ability to lift, carry, and push up to 50 pounds and pull up to 75 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Primarily field environment.

SUMMARY:

Responsible for supervision of employees while performing required tasks.
Inspects and tests equipment to ensure proper operation, utilizing equipment such as voltmeters, ammeters and related electrical testing equipment.
Assists in installation and maintenance of substation, transmission, distribution, and metering equipment.
Performs maintenance on substation equipment such as oil testing and replacement.
Trains personnel, plans jobs, facilitates record keeping, and ensures safety.
Available to perform on call work as necessary.
May serve as dispatcher and/or switchman.
Performs surveying and staking for new construction.
Properly reports and maps substation related changes to equipment and lines.
Paints, repairs, and maintains substation facilities.
Performs other duties as assigned.
