Posting Number:20251243FPosition Title:Post-Doctoral Fellowship, Character and the Augustinian TraditionPosition Type:FacultyLocation:Villanova, PARecruitment Type:Internal/External ApplicantsWork Schedule:full-time/9-monthsDepartment:139-HonorsPosition Summary:
Villanova University Honors Program invites applications for a Post-doctoral Fellowship to support the “Educating Augustinian Character: Cultivating the Pilgrim Virtues” Institutional Impact Grant, funded by the Educating Character Initiative. This is a one-year fellowship renewable for up to two years, for a total of 3 years. Our new colleague will begin in August 2025 with a teaching load of 1-1. Successful candidates may come from any area in the humanities, with research and teaching complementing our program’s interdisciplinary educational mission. Working knowledge in an area of Augustinian scholarship is preferred.

As part of an innovative curriculum, Villanova’s Honors Program offers students a distinct and intellectually rigorous academic experience, the hallmark of which is the seminar learning model. All Honors courses are taught as small seminars—normally limited to 16 students—that focus on student initiative in discussion, research and presentations. The program also provides a platform for outstanding faculty to bring forth innovative pedagogy and inquiry across disciplines and colleges.

Villanova University cultivates an academic environment marked by genuine curiosity about different perspectives, ardent receptivity to knowledge generated through intercultural connections and a genuine sensitivity to the variety of human experiences marked by domestic and global differences.

Villanova is a Catholic university sponsored by the Augustinian Order. The University is an equal opportunity employer and seeks candidates who understand, respect and can contribute to the University’s mission and values.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Depending upon the disciplinary expertise of the hired faculty member, teaching responsibilities include teaching an Honors version of the Augustine and Culture Seminar (ACS) for first year students, and upper level courses, either in the “Shaping” sequence or in the disciplinary specialty of the faculty member. ACS is a two-semester writing intensive interdisciplinary seminar that gives attention to the Catholic intellectual tradition and its ongoing mission to defend the dignity of the human person, recognize the need for human solidarity, and serve the common good. Our “Shaping a Life” curricular initiative includes “Shaping a College Life” 1-credit seminar, “Shaping a Work Life” 1-credit seminar, and “Shaping an Adult Life” 1-credit and 3 credit seminars. Additional teaching opportunities may be available.

In addition to receiving training and formation in character education principles and practices through the Educating Augustinian Character (EAC) workshop and faculty mentorship, the postdoctoral fellow will: 1) assist with coordinating and organizing EAC events and activities, 2) build the Augustinian Ambassadors program and serve as a student mentor, 3) assist with assessment measures for project activities, and 4) assist with grant reporting and further grant writing activities.
Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates must have a Ph.D., or be near completion, in a relevant discipline.
Preferred Qualifications:
Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate, interdisciplinary teaching in the Humanities, an interest in the character education, the thought and influence of Augustine, and the Catholic intellectual tradition.
