Summary
Under the supervision of the Purchasing Manager and/or under the guidance of senior purchasing staff the Buyer I assists with the procurement of goods and services of limited financial scope. This may include raw materials, tools, machine parts, weldments, equipment, electrical components/supplies, MRO, and other supplies for the organization. Assists the Purchasing Manager and/or senior purchasing staff with contract management, contract negotiation, and preparation of purchase orders as requested.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Accurately enters and processes purchase orders valued at $15,000 or less; purchase orders exceeding this amount require Purchasing Manager review and approval.
- Record purchase order acknowledgments and update PO discrepancies
- Works with quality assurance to render disposition on defective parts and supplier feedback
- Expedite and perform procurement activities to ensure the organization's current and anticipated demand for products and materials (stock and non-stock) are met and in alignment with Ipsen's purchasing strategies.
- Maintains a 90% or higher (as set by department head) on-time average
- Communicates with vendors in meeting production requirements through expediting, rescheduling, changing, or canceling of purchased items.
- Select products for purchase through knowledge, history, supplier profile, supplier survey, engineering recommendation and/or senior purchasing staff recommendation.
- Communicates effectively with all departments coordinating acceptable quality and delivery of purchased material.
- Work directly in support of line operations and in collaboration with department managers, engineers or operations staff to expedite critical build items and arrange deliveries.
- Monitor the quality and timeliness of products and materials supplied; coordinate the return of damaged goods and/or replacement items.
- Maintain and cultivate relationships with suppliers, vendors, internal or external customers.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Reviews production and project schedules, expediting critical build items with Production Control and arranging deliveries
- Communicates in real time with the production teams on items that need to be expedited.
- Takes immediate action on those items which require supplier correction
Requirements:Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of negotiation tactics and contract terms
- Basic understanding of manufacturing processes and production planning
- Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and respond in a timely manner to questions from managers, production supervisors, production personnel and customers
- Ability to recognize cost reduction and value optimization opportunities
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proficiency in business software and tools (EX: ERP systems), as well as Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as price vs. cost analysis, discounts, percentages, proportions, area, circumference, volume, metrics and interest. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry
- Effective time management and organization skills to handle multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and manage priorities.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, blueprints, component specifications.
- Ability to write reports, and business correspondence and present information to senior staff and leadership.
Education and Experience
- Associates degree in business administration, supply chain, or related field required, Bachelors preferred.
- Minimum 2+ year(s) prior experience working in the capacity of purchasing, production planning or similar experience required, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
