Director, Recovery Accounting

The Recovery Accounting Director will directly oversee a team of 4 Managers and indirectly oversee 12 Accountants responsible for the preparation of accurate and timely accounting information for properties individually and collectively, as well as other key reports for senior management. 

Overall Responsibilities:                                                                                                                                  

  • Review month end close processes to ensure accurate reporting of results on a monthly basis 
  • Supports overall Company culture of developing productive teams through leadership, training, developmental experiences, collaboration, feedback, and mentoring   
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret commercial lease language to review and approve cost recovery set ups and calculations to ensure accurate cost recoveries 
  • Strategize with other functions throughout the organization to maximize cost recoveries 
  • Analyze expense reimbursement leakage and unfavorable or ambiguous lease language, suggesting improvements and helping to minimize leakage  
  • Suggest and implement process improvements to existing practices and procedures to gain efficiencies and develop best practices  
  • Provide information to other stakeholders throughout the organization including, but not limited to, analysis of expense reimbursement leakage and unfavorable or ambiguous lease language
  • Responsible for staff training, appraisals, goal setting and issue resolution
  • Ensure compliance with SOX controls in assigned areas of responsibility
  • Review CAM and tax billings to tenants and assist as needed in resolving disputes 
  • Help to lead due diligence efforts on acquisitions related to expense recoveries   
  • Other ad hoc requests from owners and management as required

 Qualifications:                                                                                                                                                      

  • Accounting/Finance Graduate
  • Management experience required
  • Commercial real estate experience required
  • Team approach with positive attitude
  • Detailed spreadsheet expertise, vast excel knowledge
  • Attention to detail as well as ability to see the big picture
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize different functions and processes
  • Superior oral and written communication skills with an ability to communicate across all level of the organization 
  • Capable of clear lateral thinking with a disciplined approach to documenting and solving problems.
  • Working knowledge of JDE, Hubble and Power BI a plus
