Position Summary:

WSB is seeking a highly experienced Substation Lead Engineering Manager to lead and mentor a team of substation engineers specializing in both Physical and Protection & Control (P&C) design for high-voltage utility systems and large-scale energy projects. This role demands a seasoned professional who can independently manage complex substation engineering projects, ensure high-quality deliverables, and foster growth and development within the team. The ideal candidate will combine deep technical expertise in physical substation design and protection & control engineering with strong leadership and mentoring capabilities to support project execution and team development.

Why WSB?

We’re known for our cutting-edge technologies, collaborative culture, and commitment to growth—for our people and our clients. With national reach and local expertise, we’re redefining what infrastructure can be.

What you will do:

  • Lead all aspects of substation physical and P&C engineering design for high voltage (4kV – 230kV) and extra-high voltage (EHV, above 230kV) projects.
  • Oversee development of detailed design documents including general arrangements, one-line and three-line diagrams, grounding and lightning plans, AC/DC calculations, control and protection schematics, equipment specifications, and construction documentation.
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects to ensure timely, and high-quality delivery of engineering scopes.
  • Collaborate closely with internal teams (civil, structural) and external stakeholders to coordinate design activities and resolve technical issues.
  • Provide technical consultation and guidance on protection schemes, relay settings, and system protection coordination.
  • Support procurement and construction phases through submittal reviews and technical clarifications.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of engineers and designers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth.
  • Conduct thorough quality assurance and control (QA/QC) reviews of team deliverables to uphold WSB’s standards.
  • Identify team strengths and gaps; design and implement training and coaching plans to enhance technical capabilities.
  • Serve as a primary technical point of contact for clients on complex projects, understanding client needs and aligning engineering solutions accordingly.
  • Participate in client meetings, technical reviews, and project presentations.
  • Assist in proposal development, project estimating, and strategic planning to grow the substation engineering portfolio.

What you will bring:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license required.
  • Minimum 8-10 years of progressive experience in high voltage substation design, covering both physical and protection & control disciplines.
  • Proven experience managing and leading engineering teams, including mentoring and training engineers.
  • Expertise in NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, and other relevant codes and standards for substation engineering.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Bentley MicroStation, and engineering analysis tools such as CDEGS or WinIGS.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with demonstrated ability to interface effectively with clients and project teams.
  • Experience with proposal writing, project scheduling, and budgeting preferred.
  • Ability to travel as required for project site visits and client meetings.

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with relay settings, SCADA systems, and substation communication protocols.

Work Environment & Travel:

- This position may require occasional travel to project sites or client offices.
