Job Title: Accountant I 

Department: Accounting

Reports To: Accounting Manager

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Grade: 7

 

Summary The Accountant I supports the accurate preparation and reconciliation of financial records, ensuring clear audit trails and compliance with policies. This role involves managing accounts payable, posting to the general ledger, preparing internal financial reports, and assisting with audits.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Accounts Payable and Batch Posting Responsibilities

  • Prepare, reconcile, examine, and post accounts payable general ledger entries
  • Follow-up to clear outstanding items and discrepancies
  • Classify total per ledger account and prepare cash clearing schedule
  • Examine, collect and file supporting documentation such as invoices and payments to support business transaction and policies 
  • Daily reconcilement and processing of checks received, issued, and requested
  • Prepare financial reports for managers within the credit union. 
  • Gather information requested by auditors and examiners

Accounting Responsibilities

  • Reconcile ATM accounts to balance to E-Funds/CO-OP Network reports 
  • Reconcile ATM/debit card and check disputes 
  • Prepare, check, and proof general ledger reconciliation as assigned
  • Examine outstanding items and discrepancies and ensure adequate follow-up to clear outstanding items
  • Update end-of-month entries to include accruals, prepaid, depreciation, etc
  • Verify details of business transactions and supporting documentation to ledgers/computer spreadsheets/databases

  • Proactively approach issues and offer creative solutions that will make doing business with RGCU easier
  • Assists in any other areas as directed by the Accounting Manager, AVP of Finance, Senior Management and/or President/CEO.
  • Report all suspicious activity to the Risk Management department via the compliance group email

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience               

Experience- 6 months to 2 years related experience

Education- 2-year degree or completion of a specialized course of study OR 2 years of related experience.

 

Language Skills                  

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, members, and the general public.

 

Mathematical Skills                  

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.   

 

Reasoning Ability                  

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Must have a comprehensive knowledge of accounting procedures, principles, and standards. Possess comprehensive knowledge of reconciliation.

 

Computer Skills                  

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of software used to perform accounting. Spreadsheet software such as Excel and Word Processing software.
