General Summary

Assign and supervise skilled trades employees, order and receive materials, and coordinate maintenance activities with needs of the University specifically related to functional area of expertise and assignment.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan and issue job assignments to skilled trades employees, contractors, student support staff, and other staff as may be assigned.
  • Inspect facilities or equipment to identify required maintenance and preventive maintenance, determine deficiencies, initiate repairs, and order repair materials, parts and/or equipment.
  • Order and receive materials for maintenance use.
  • Inspect completed assignments and determine need for additional work.
  • Perform periodic safety inspections and ensure safety compliance of all supervised employees.
  • Communicate with University departments on the completion of service requirements.
  • Read blue prints, interpret drawings, and extract material take offs.
  • Recognize system deficiencies in the area of assignment, in both new and old systems, identify and recommend system modifications, provide cost estimates; and implement repair, maintenance, and modification of systems to eliminate operating deficiencies.
  • Prepare estimates of labor and material required to repair, renovate, and maintain systems in the area of assignment.
  • Identify deferred maintenance system requirements in the area of assignment to include equipment requirements and estimated cost to the University.
  • Develop and maintain an inventory of facilities or equipment relevant to assigned trades function operating within each Building.
  • Prepare reports using standard computer software such as Microsoft Office.
  • Perform related Department duties, as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge of applicable codes, estimating, maintenance and repair, material procurement, and reporting skills typically acquired through completion of an Associate's Degree in a technical field related to the functional area. Additional experience and education may be considered in lieu of an Associate's Degree.

Five years, within the last seven years, of full time work experience in a commercial, industrial, and/or institutional setting performing tasks related to the functional area.

Full time supervisory experience in the functional area is required.

State of Michigan Licensure in relevant trade area is required.

Demonstrated leadership of skilled trades employees in the area of assignment is required.

Possession of a valid state driver's license is required.

Expertise in computer software including MS office is required.

Ability to perform physical active work requiring frequent walking, climbing, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling and crouching activity to perform routine work functions is necessary.

Ability to meet Departmental standards of reasonable hygiene is necessary.
