The Global Studies Center at the University of Pittsburgh is seeking 2 language instructors (Chinese and Arabic) for their Summer 2025 program:

General Responsibilities

• Curriculum Design & Delivery

o Design and implement a rigorous, engaging, and age-appropriate curriculum for high-achieving high school students.

o Develop daily lesson plans that promote critical thinking, global awareness, and subject-specific skills.

o Align instruction with the interdisciplinary focus of the Governor’s School and the values of global education.

• Instructional Duties

o Deliver content through lectures, interactive discussions, group work, simulations, and project-based learning.

o Provide ongoing feedback to students on their participation and performance.

o Integrate writing, research, and presentation assignments into the course.

• Assessment & Evaluation

o Develop rubrics and evaluate student work in a timely and constructive manner.

o Track attendance and participation.

o Submit final grades as required.

• Student Engagement & Mentoring

o Foster an inclusive, respectful, and intellectually stimulating classroom environment.

o Serve as an academic mentor and role model.

o Attend and support select extracurricular or evening events to build community.

• Collaboration & Administration

o Coordinate with other faculty and program staff on shared expectations and themes.

o Attend pre-program orientation and faculty meetings.

o Submit final course syllabi, student evaluations, and participation in post-program debriefs.

Arabic Language Instructor

• Responsibilities

o Provide introductory-level Arabic instruction, focusing on listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

o Integrate cultural content and practical language use through games, songs, and interactive activities.

o Use immersion strategies to encourage student engagement.

• Minimum Qualifications

o PhD in Arabic, Middle Eastern Studies, Linguistics, or related field.

o Native or near-native fluency in Modern Standard Arabic.

o Experience teaching Arabic to novice learners, especially at the high school level.

Chinese Language Instructor

• Responsibilities

o Teach basic Mandarin Chinese, emphasizing conversational skills, vocabulary, tones, and character recognition.

o Incorporate cultural content, including traditions, festivals, calligraphy, and history.

o Use interactive and immersive techniques to support language acquisition.

• Minimum Qualifications

o PhD or MA in Chinese, East Asian Studies, Applied Linguistics, or a related discipline.

o Native or near-native fluency in Mandarin.

o Experience teaching Mandarin Chinese to beginners, ideally in an intensive or pre-college environment.
