Job Description:

SUMMARY:

The Welder welds metal components together to fabricate or repair products, such as machine parts, plant equipment, mobile homes, motors, and generators, according to layouts, blueprints or work orders, using brazing and a variety of arc and gas welding equipment. All work is accomplished IAW with the applicable Army regulations, DA PAMs, Technical Manuals, Technical Bulletins, and Repair Manuals. Perform maintenance and repair activities on various vehicles and pieces of equipment including but not limited to heavy equipment, small engines, lawn mowers, tractors, trailers, all-terrain vehicles, forklifts, tactical and non-tactical equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Welds metal parts together, using both gas welding or brazing and any combination of arc welding processes, performs related tasks such as thermal cutting and grinding, repairs broken or cracked parts, fills holes, and increases size of metal parts, positions, and clamps together components of fabricated metal products preparatory to welding.

• May locate and repair cracks in industrial engine cylinder heads, using inspection equipment and gas torch.

• May perform repairs only and be required to pass employer performance tests or standard tests to meet certification standards of governmental agencies or professional and technical associations.

• The Welder, Combination, Maintenance will layout, fit, and fabricate metal components to assemble structural forms, such as machinery frames, and pressure vessels.

• Implement welding techniques, metallurgy, and engineering requirements to include experimental welding to analyze engineering drawings and specifications to plan welding operations.

• Layout, position, and secure parts and assemblies according to specification, using straightedge, combination square, calipers, and ruler.

• Tack-weld or weld components and assemblies, using electric, gas, arc, or other welding equipment to include MMW (Manual Metal Arc), FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding) and GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding).

• Cut workpiece, using powered saws, hand shears, break press or chipping knife.

• Observe tests on welded surfaces, such as hydrostatic, x-ray, and dimension tolerance to evaluate weld quality and conformance to specifications.

• Inspect grooves, angles, or gap allowances, using micrometer, caliper, and precision measuring.

• Remove rough spots from workpiece, using portable grinder, hand file, or scraper.

• Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions. heat, form, and dress metal parts, using hand tools, torch, and arc welding equipment.

• Have the knowledge to ignite torch and adjust valve, amperage, or voltage to obtain desired flame or arc.

• Develop templates and other work aids to hold and align parts and/or structures.

• Operates and utilizes an assortment of tools to perform repairs that include power, pneumatic, and machinery such as grinding machines, presses, torch-cutting equipment, jacks and hoists to lift and move large components.

• Operates and inspects machines or equipment to diagnose defects, dismantles, and reassembles equipment, using hoists and hand tools, examines parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges, replaces defective engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions, and tests overhauled equipment to insure operating efficiency.

• Performs all scheduled and unscheduled maintenance.

• Familiar with reading schematics diagrams for electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.

• All work is accomplished IAW with the applicable Army regulations, DA PAMs, Technical Manuals, Technical Bulletins, and Repair Manuals, and Company procedures.

• Maintain good housekeeping, and energy conservation and safety precautions always.

• Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.

• Perform other related duties as assigned or requested, which may include travel to and assisting at other sites to accommodate applicant flow.

• This position supports the DOD on a federal installation and the candidate must be available to work at the assigned physical location during business hours.

o 7:30AM-4:30PM (M-F)

• The position requires 3 years of demonstrated experience

• This position requires welding certifications from an accredited agency.

• Must pass a respirator and a physical test that will require a clean-shaven face.

• Ability to identify needed remedies or improvements and recommend solutions.

• Ability to multitask and demonstrate attention to detail.

• May be required to take a welding certification test.

• Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services.

• Must possess a valid driver's license.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Essential :

• High school diploma or equivalent.

• The position requires 3 years of demonstrated experience

• This position requires welding certifications from an accredited agency.

• Must pass a respirator and a physical test that will require a clean-shaven face.

• Ability to identify needed remedies or improvements and recommend solutions.

• Ability to multitask and demonstrate attention to detail.

• May be required to take a welding re-certification test.

• Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services.

• Must possess a valid driver's license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must have the ability to work indoors or outdoors in bad weather. Must be able to stand for long periods of time, stoop down and lift and carry Handle equipment/supplies weighing 30-50 pounds individually and occasionally items weighing more than 50 pounds with assistance. Must possess visual acuity to review written documentation; ability to hear and understand speech at normal room levels and on the telephone; and the manual dexterity to operate hand tools. Wearing safety items of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) e.g. gloves, safety shoes, protective eyewear to include being able to wear full-face respirators.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/HOURS:

This position is not eligible for remote work, as the essential functions of the role require the employee to perform duties on-site. Job is performed indoors and outdoors and will be exposed to prevailing weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment may vary from moderate to high, depending on location. Job will require working flexible hours, sometimes under short notice, to accommodate for mission requirements to include weekends and holidays. Overtime may be required.
