Function of Position:

Summary and Purpose of Position: Advising and career development are essential components of MCC's holistic student support model that promotes equitable outcomes for college completion, transfer, and social and economic mobility. The Career Success Coach is a member of the Student Success and Strategic Initiatives team and is focused on the successful onboarding, retention, and goal attainment of students, with particular emphasis on exploratory/undeclared students. In addition, the Career Success Coach is committed to promoting advisement and student engagement functions that help students develop academic and career goals, maintain timely progress through milestone courses, and complete programs of study. As students' primary point of contact, the Career Success Coach will maintain open, collaborative, and effective working relationships with students, staff, and faculty. This position reports to the Director of Career Services and requires working occasional evenings and Saturdays.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

Primary Functions:

  • Provide holistic support and guidance to students as they explore their personal, academic, and career interests
  • Advise students about MCC's programs of study and academic pathways based on their career interests, skills, and experience
  • Engage Liberal Arts and Sciences/Exploratory/Undeclared students in decision making processes and promote appropriate and responsible choices on academic pathway selection
  • Develop a positive relationship with a caseload of students and work with them to identify and resolve barriers that may impede their academic success
  • Educate students on the academic program steps necessary to successfully complete a certificate or degree program and/or transfer to a four-year college
  • Create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive environment for students
  • Assist students with academic pathway, career, and transfer exploration and planning
  • Utilize career and educational tools to assist students with career information related to students' interests and aptitudes (e.g. Career Coach and FOCUS 2)
  • Provide coaching to help students understand and address personal, social or behavioral challenges that may affect their educational success
  • Make referrals to other campus and community resources regarding student issues both academic and personal
  • Collaborate closely with academic departments to stay up to date on curricular changes to maintain a high level of expertise in programs and pathways
  • Unofficially evaluates and interprets high school and college transcripts to determine eligibility for competitive health programs
  • Coordinate advisement and career workshops, events, and presentations as required including professional development for faculty and staff throughout the College
  • Maintain detailed student records and notes, including thorough documentation of advising sessions

Secondary Functions:

  • Assists students with job skills that will allow them to be successful in their job search, including resume and letter writing; interviewing; job search strategies
  • Participate in resume and cover letter critique service for students and alumni
  • Represent the College in appropriate professional
  • Interpret relevant college policies and procedures for students, faculty, and staff
  • Participate in events outside of regular college hours, such as college open houses and advisement events
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the Director

Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization
  • A minimum of 1 year full-time professional experience in career development, career services, advisement, or admissions
  • Knowledge of a broad range of career paths and insight into the admission process including decision-making related to careers, selecting majors, and transfer opportunities

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree preferred
  • Nationally recognized career services related credentialing
  • Experience with helping new students transition into a college setting
  • Experience with student success initiatives
  • Experience with BANNER
  • Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently


Additional Information:

Salary: Salary is determined based on experience, internal equity and college budget. This position has a range of $52,000 to $52,916 and is based on these mentioned factors.

MCC offers a Flexible Work Policy for benefit eligible employees. Types of flexible work arrangements include flextime/staggered shifts, remote work/telecommuting and compressed work schedule. The availability of flexible work arrangements varies by division, department, and position, based upon business and operational needs.
