Position: Postdoctoral Research Associate

Description:

The Ferris Research Group in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at Princeton University invites applications for a postdoctoral research associate position, to start as early as September 2025. The Ferris group studies high-temperature reaction chemistry and particulate formation using optical diagnostic methods, with applications to alternative fuel design and atmospheric chemistry. The successful candidate will be expected to assist with the commissioning of a new shock tube facility and will conduct fundamental experimental research related to multiple ongoing projects, including optical diagnostic design and high-temperature ammonia oxidation chemistry with applications to green manufacturing and recycling of steel. Qualifications for the position include:Expertise in experimental chemical kinetics and laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS, fixed-wavelength absorption, scanned-direct absorption)Experience operating and maintaining a shock tube facility (operational proficiency required)Kinetic modeling proficiency (Chemkin, Cantera), analytical proficiency (sensitivity, rate of production, etc.)Spectroscopic modeling experience preferred (HITRAN/HITEMP)Familiarity with mechanical, electrical, and data acquisition systems (e.g., vacuum systems, high-pressure gas handling, analog signals/switching, high-speed data acquisition)Strong publication recordIn addition to technical expertise, we value strong communication, technical writing skills, and teamwork. The successful candidate is a self-starter with a demonstrated ability to independently lead research projects. Candidates must also be comfortable working with and mentoring graduate and undergraduate student researchers. To be eligible for this position, a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field is required. The appointment will be for one year with possible renewal based on performance and available funding. This is a full-time position; work must be conducted on-site at Princeton. Expected Salary Range: 65000-70000
