SUNY Alfred State College of Technology seeks a Director of Procurement. As a member of the Business Affairs Division, the Director of Procurement will oversee all departmental functions, including the purchasing of goods and services, travel, and accounts payable. Goods and services are procured with the highest ethical standards in accordance with college, SUNY, and New York State policies and regulations.

The successful candidate will engage in continuous process improvement, education of the college community, savings and quality initiatives, reporting to college administration, support for budget analyses, and data-informed improvements. The Director of Procurement reports directly to the Controller.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Procurement team, including professional development, job training, and supervision
  • Manage all procurement activity at SUNY Alfred State College of Technology, including purchasing, travel and accounts payable functions
  • Maintain/update policies and procedures while developing training tools to help college personnel with procurement processes
  • Analyze, monitor, and review purchasing data and transactions to identify trends in procurement for use in creating dashboards and driving data-informed decisions.
  • Oversee competitive bid processes (RFPs, RFIs, RFQs)
  • Manage supplier relationships to optimize service, quality, and cost
  • Identify and implement opportunities to reduce purchasing costs by improving Alfred State's buying patterns, ensuring all savings initiatives are accurately documented and integrated into budgets and strategic plans
  • Report and present savings achievements against targets
  • Implement new software and automation initiatives
  • Coordinate and recommend MWBE (Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises) sourced goods to assist the campus in achieving MWBE discretionary procurement goals
  • Lead contract and vendor relationship development, negotiation, and execution
  • Develop departmental strategy and sourcing plans to provide best price, quality, and value
  • Ensure timely procurement related reporting to SUNY System Administration
  • Assist internal stakeholders to ensure timely procurement
  • Communicate effectively, including in technical contract language
  • Demonstrate excellent leadership, people management, organizational, and presentation skills


Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Supply Chain Management, or a relevant field
  • At least five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in procurement, sourcing, finance, or vendor management
  • Experience with competitive bidding (RFI, RFP, RFQ), vendor selection, vendor risk assessment, and/or contract management
  • Supervisory/management experience with a diverse team
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Business, Finance, Supply Chain Management, or a related area
  • Experience in procurement and contracting within higher education or not-for-profit institutions
  • Familiarity with SUNY procurement processes
  • Experience using procurement management software (e.g., Jaggaer)
  • Experience with complex negotiations
  • Skills in designing, analyzing, and presenting data dashboards


Additional Information:

The starting salary for this position is $70,000 and is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
