Student Activities and Leadership Programs’ (SALP) mission is to cultivate student engagement, leadership, and professional development in an effort to foster community and connection among students. SALP does this by advising student government and student media; supervising student-operated services; coordinating program areas such as the Student Community Engagement Center, Student Sustainability Center, and PSU Food Pantry; and advising over 100 student organizations and the student-run funding boards. Position Summary
This position facilitates student learning, success, and retention by providing advising for up to 35 student organizations, which includes mentoring and coaching student leaders; supporting group and leadership development; providing fiscal and administrative oversight for approximately $500K; mediating student group conflict; risk management; assessing student needs; and autonomously working towards and prioritizing goals and deadlines. Advisors also coordinate and communicate with other offices across campus and utilize a wide variety of technologies and systems.

As the advisor to four Student Operated Services (SOSes)–5th Avenue Cinema, Littman+White Galleries, Portland State Events Board, and Portland State Production Services–this position is also responsible for the supervision, personnel responsibilities, and advising for up to 35 student employees and 12 interns. Advising the SOSes involves facilitating them in maintaining quality levels of services and programs delivered to Portland State students and student organizations.

Advisors participate in department-wide initiatives that support the mission such as curriculum development and facilitation of leadership fellows sessions, event planning, training, policy development, and assessment. Each staff person in the department is responsible for promoting and modeling teamwork and establishment of an inclusive, collaborative, service-oriented multicultural environment.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field
  • At least 2 years of professional experience working with student leaders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters degree in relevant field and one or more years of experience advising/supporting student leaders.
  • Student leadership development knowledge and experience.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience working with diverse college students in a university or college environment.
  • Scheduling flexibility to meet student organization needs (some nights and weekends).
  • Event planning experience.
  • Experience supervising student employees, or comparable experience.
  • Experience with group facilitation, lesson plan development, or teaching.

Salary is dependent on several factors, and new employees will typically start around the Q1 level to allow for later growth within the salary band. PSU has a structured process for determining starting compensation, taking into account years of related experience, applicable skills, knowledge and abilities, market parity, and internal equity.

The starting annual salary for this position will be $56,880 but may be negotiated above this rate dependent upon the factors above, the budget of the hiring department, and approval from HR.
