Job Brief The Sr. Manager Data Engineering is a hands-on technical role who architects, designs and delivers Business Intelligence, Data Warehousing and Big Data Solution for business. At DHL, our people are our greatest asset! Everyone’s contribution drives us to be the world's #1 logistics company. Certified as a Great Place to Work and as a Top Employer, we're dedicated to fostering a positive, collaborative, and supportive environment for all. Our commitment and engagement with Our People ensure we continuously build a workplace we're all proud of. Plus, with competitive compensation and exceptional perks, we make sure your personal life shines just as brightly as your career. SUMMARY: The Sr. Manager Data Engineering is a hands-on technical role who architects, designs and delivers Business Intelligence, Data Warehousing and Big Data Solution for business. This role is responsible for design and implementation of data warehouses, data marts, and data stores, while ensuring high levels of data availability. This role is also responsible for defining data standards and models for warehouse architectures. The Sr. Manager Data Engineering will in addition evaluate and select all infrastructure components such as software, hardware, database management systems, and networking capabilities. This role should have knowledge of leading trends and best practices in Big Data and Business Intelligence and build expert level understanding of tools and technology utilized by the company to provide self-service BI. As a leader in DHL eCommerce Data Architecture topics, you will provide best-fit architectural solutions to manage our global data ecosystem. You will work with key stakeholders, business partners, IT counterparts and the Enterprise Architect function to define requirements, identify source data, assist with detailed data models, analyze and validate data, troubleshoot data issues, and promote data quality. You will design, develop and support data services that ensure the fulfillment of business information needs and support our digitalization journey. The primary focus of the Sr. Manager Data Engineering is to improve the consistency, timeliness, quality, security and delivery of data while removing unnecessary costs from the complex, fragmented, heterogeneous data architecture. This role does start as an individual contributor and you must have strong hands-on skills in all the areas, the team will increase as resources are needed. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Mapping data sources: An understanding of where data is stored and maintained. Although the application teams are responsible for documenting the details of application data, you must know where data is maintained and accessed. Defining integrative views of data: These views will draw together data from across the domains. Some views will use a database of extracted data - others will bring together data in "near real time." You will work with businesspeople and data engineers and application designers to identify and model these integrative views and determine the quality-of-service requirements — data currency, availability, response times and data volumes. Documenting existing data movement: record how data movement is happening. You will coordinate efforts and foster consistency while documenting the frequency of movement, the source and destination of each step, how the data is transformed as it moves, and any aggregation or calculations. Designing new data movements: Having documented the status quo - the sources of data and how the data is moved around - you will then look at how this movement can be improved. Design and implement redundant systems, policies, and procedures for disaster recovery and data archiving to ensure effective availability, protection, and integrity of data assets. Act as a subject matter expert for technical guidance, solution design and best practices within the business analytics organization. Keep current on big data and data visualization technology trends, evaluate, work on proof-of-concept and make recommendations on the technologies based on their merit. Develop a technical center of excellence within the analytics organization through training, mentorship, and process innovation. Create the master data management strategy as well as the data governance and data security. REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS: Cloud & Data Architecture Proven experience in architecting, designing, and building enterprise-grade solutions using Azure Data Lake (ADLS Gen2), Azure Databricks, Azure Data Factory, Synapse Analytics (SQL DW), Azure Functions, Event Hub, Stream Analytics, and API Management. Understanding of DevOps practices using Azure DevOps for CI/CD pipelines and deployment automation. Familiar with data security frameworks, access controls, and compliance practices in cloud environments. Advanced Analytics & Machine Learning Ability to mentor teams on predictive analytics, leveraging R and Azure Machine Learning, and driving successful end-to-end model lifecycle management. ETL/ELT & Data Engineering Expertise in designing and implementing scalable ETL/ELT pipelines with an emphasis on performance optimization and data transformation best practices. Experienced in handling both structured and unstructured data across diverse storage and processing platforms. Analytics & BI Tools Expertise in architecting and implementing scalable Power BI solutions integrated with Azure Data Lake, Synapse, and SQL Server, with strong knowledge of dataset governance and workspace management. Proficiency in Python for data engineering tasks, particularly with Apache Spark. Data Management & Governance Strong knowledge of data modeling, data mining, and business requirements analysis. Experience with data governance practices, including metadata management, data lineage, and data quality assurance. Collaboration & Communication Excellent communication skills — both verbal and written — with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders. Skilled in requirement elicitation, technical documentation, and stakeholder engagement. Experience managing globally distributed teams, including offshore delivery models. Passion for mentoring and growing junior team members. Personal Attributes Strong problem-solving mindset and ability to juggle multiple concurrent projects effectively. Experience in leading internal improvement initiatives and contributing to organizational knowledge sharing. Self-motivated, proactive learner with a drive to stay ahead of emerging technologies and industry trends.
